Effect of ESA, DLA and IB on HB for couples

I am still on IB and DLA, but am in the process of being moved to ESA. My partner has recently moved from IB to ESA WRAG.

This has led to the applicable amount available for housing benefit to be significantly reduced, as we were moved off the couples disability premium, and only given a disability component for one person now. The council do not seem to know what the right thing to do is, and are looking into it, but I thought that I’d ask here too.

It seems that there should be some alternative to the couples component for this situation. Am I right? Anyone got a suggestion? Sorry if this is a bit OT.

We can only talk in generalities in the forum and you need specific advise regarding what you may be eligible for and in particular your Housing Benefit. See

Where to get advice?

or try Googling "welfare advice" with tyour town or county.

The Disability Premium is not payable with ESA, in addition, as you will both be receiving Contribution Based ESA, as opposed to Income Related, you will not be eligible for any of the ESA Premiums.

Thanks for your help Gordon. So this is just another way of reducing people's incomes?

My partner was given the ESA 'work related component', but I was given nothing and they're now looking at how to resolve this, but didn't sound too sure. Oh well, until PIP comes along we should be okay.

Ta bro58. I think that I could use that to check up on whatever new calculation they come up with. It might be worth me just crossing my fingers, and hoping it all works out, as it may do. If not, I might have to do some digging then.

Thanks for the links bro58 and Gordon.
