PIP question re mobility was created by Jude
Hi ,
I have downloaded the PIP information. However, I am still confused regarding the mobility component. If you can walk, but get pain and discomfort and breathlessness after walking 20 or 30 meters, is that what is taking into account when the decision is made?
Is the distance you can then walk after taking medication ignored? For example if I use my GTN spray and inhaler after walking say 20 meters and I can then continue to walk until I get more pain and discomfort and need to use my meds again is this distance ignored and just the distance I first get pain is what they need to know?

Also following my brain surgery I now feel unwell after any exertion and could not go out every day because I feel too ill after walking.

Also, because I am not able to drive following my surgery due to visual problems will this take away any mobility I may be entitled to?

Thanks

I

Hi A,

I can understand your confusion, as the assessment process is not at all straightforward.

As explained in our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page) from the bottom of Page 51 onwards, in particular under the heading :

"Remember ‘reliably’" (middle of Page 53)

Reliably is a very important part of the assessment.

You should also note that the paragraph below this one states that any moving that involves, breathlessness, severe pain, fatigue or discomfort may not be counted.

Therefore, you should state the distance that you can "Move" before the onset of any such pain, discomfort, etc, (if you can do so for more than 50% of the time) and any distance moved after that should not be counted.

Even if you can "Move" further after resting or taking medication.

You should also remember that you should only count the distance that you can "Move" for the majority of the time. (More than 50% of the time)

You do not have to be able to drive to be entitled to The Mobility Component of DLA, or The Mobility Component of PIP.

Any award monies could be used for Taxi's etc, there is no stipulation that they must be used in driving or owning a car yourself.

I have ME and the advice I have been given by charities supporting people with ME is that you must be able to perform an action 'safely, reliably and repeatedly.' By 'safely' is meant that you should be able to walk without making yourself ill. You should list as the distance you are able to walk as the distance which doesn't make you feel ill.
