Dear B&W team

I am currently claiming ESA Support, the claim being due for reconsideration in November 2014. I recently had a period of time in hospital due to a heart attack and am now on drug treatment for this condition. Do I need to contact the DWP about my heart attack now or wait and include the information in the form I expect to get in November.

Hi B,

You would only have to report a change in your medical conditions if it resulted in you no longer fulfilling the qualifying criteria for The SG.

Therefore, if your limitations have not diminished to such an extent that you would no longer qualify for the SG, there would be no reason to report a Change of Circumstances.

In case you are not aware reassessments for current ESA recipients are being deferred :

Therefore, it may be some time before you are reassessed.

Hi there,

Thanks for the answer to my query and my apology for not responding earlier. I am now wondering if, as I was in hospital for 5 days and therefore away from home, that this information needs to be passed onto the DWP or do you have to tell them only if it is for a non medical reason, for example a two day visit to parent? It's a bit confusing as to what is considered important to tell them.

As you have already been in hospital there is probably no point in telling the DWP unless this is part of an on going treatment which will see you having to stay in hospital again.

The legislation refers to any day that the claimant is not at there normal place of abode, but I doubt they will be any issues for being away for a couple of days, however, for longer periods you need to consider;

- appointments for a WFI or assessment are only required to give 7 days written notice which includes time in the post, so claimants usually only get 5 days notice.

- Requests for documentation usually have a two week turn around time.

- New ESA50s have four weeks to be completed and returned.
