Dla home visit in few days was created by margaret
Hi this is my first time posting but i have been a member for quite some time. Im losing my job after 18 years through ill health, which is severe degenerative disc disease. Oestoarthritis and fibro along with depression and anxiety. I got turned down for dla in jan after applying in oct last year but on asking for a reconsideration im having a home medical this tues. Im so stressed with this and have chronic pain daily but some days are really worse than others but i dont have any good days. Can any members give me any advice on the home visit and what to expect. Also some days i can maybe get out with my son for a couple of hours to the shops if he does the shopping, stands in ques etc and i rest on seats. How do people explain a condition that fluctuates slightly even hourly to the dla doctor.

Thanks for reading mags

Hi m,

Welcome to the forum :)

There is an FAQ titled : DLA Medical Examination

Within the above you will see another blue link, titled :

"70 Questions You’re Likely To Be Asked At Your DLA Medical"

Click on that, and it takes you to this page :

DLA Guides

It is the 6th link down the page.

Whilst on the same page, you may wish to review our DLA Claims Guides, you will see that there is also further useful information.

Members are also most welcome to post their own experiences of DLA Home Medicals, if they wish.

Hi m,

As you may know, it is not the medical condition in itself that may qualify you for DLA awards, moreover it is the walking limitations and/or care needs that you suffer as a result of the medical condition.

Once you have established that you suffer with a medical condition, it is then important to go into detail of how it affects you on a day to day basis.

Maybe you could sit down with a friend/relative/carer, and compile a diary of a typical day running from say 7AM to 7AM the next day. You may find it easier to write it down, you can then hand a copy to The EMP before they start the medical.

Break down every aspect of the day, from rising, though washing, dressing, taking medication, breakfast, etc, etc and even through the night. Think of each activity, hour on hour, and how and why you need help/care. To be entitled to DLA Care Component, you do not have to be receiving the care, it is whether the care is reasonably required.

Remember, for HR Care the care must be reasonably required throughout the day And the night.

You should relate how you are for the majority of the time, so if you do compile a typical day diary, try not to pick your worse day, or indeed a better day as an example.

Hi m,

With regards to the Mobility component, it is not simply whether you can walk and how far,

It is :

1. they are unable to walk

or

2. their ability to walk out of doors is so limited when considering

2.1 the distance over which

or

2.2 the speed at which

or

2.3 the length of time for which

or

2.4 the manner in which they can make progress on foot without severe discomfort, they are virtually unable to walk

or

3. the effort needed to walk would put their life at risk or be likely to lead to a serious deterioration in their health.

Further, any distance that you can walk, but suffer severe pain, discomfort, fatigue or breathlessness whilst doing so, should not be counted.

e.g. You can walk 10 metres without suffering, severe pain, discomfort, fatigue or breathlessness.

You can then go on to walk a further 30 meters whilst suffering, severe pain, discomfort, fatigue or breathlessness.

Only the 10 metres should count not the whole 40 metres.

If something similar is the case with you explain fully how far you can walk before the onset of severe pain, discomfort, fatigue or breathlessness.

You can find The DM's advice on this from paragraph 61251 of the guide that I posted the link for in my second post.
