Hi. I have been on ESA for around 2 and a half years. I was changed over from IB without a medical. Well I had the form last year and sent it back in around October. I had a medical 11th August and she said i would hear in a few weeks. Well I just had a call from the DWP and the man asked if I would be available tomorrow afternoon between 1 and 5 for the DM to call me about the medical and decision and its really important i take the call. Well now i am nervous, as anxiety is a big issue for me I now have to wait until tomorrow to find out the outcome of my medical. I asked if it means I have failed as I have read that people are getting these calls when they have been found fit for work. He said its a new thing they brought in October last year and everyone has a phone call. Is this true. I can not how I can be found fit for work as I still have the same conditions as before and a new one since then. Please if anyone could let me know if they have had this phone call and are still on ESA. Thank you.

I am afraid the DWP do not make these calls to claimants who have been successful with their ESA claims, although it is possible if you are currently in the Support Group that one is being made because you are being moved to the WRAG.

I would go back through your ESA50 to look for the reasons why you meet each descriptor and write some short notes for each one, do the same for any evidence that you had attached. When the DWP phone they will tell you why they think you have failed and ask you questions about why you think you should be awarded ESA.

We have had members overturn a Decision in one of these phone calls, so it is not a foregone conclusion that all is lost and there are still options if they still don't agree with you.

Let us know how you get on and we can offer further advice if necessary.

No I am in the WRAG group. I am not very good on the phone. I can not understand how they are saying I am fit for work. I have had mental health issues 10 plus years and was transferred the ESA successfully due to that. No w I have a physical disability on top and they are saying that I am fit for work.

Gordon,

May I mention a claimant whom the DM did phone with good news? The person has severe and permanent physical and cognitive impairment as a result of a stroke. When transferred from IS to ESA without a medical the DM phoned and told her of the award: 3 years in Support Group.

Wishing Michelle all the very best. :)

Hi. I just had the phone call. All I scored points on was initiating tasks. 6 points. The woman made her mind up with the medical report alone. She was not interested in nothing I had to say. She had to hang up and call me back because of the state I was in. She said all I can claim now is JSA. I told her I would rather live on now than declare myself fit for work.

She said the tasks are very basic and that. Yes I can move, stand up, sit down, talk, listen, pick up a pint of milk, etc then I am fit for work. I said that I lose focus and often miss things going on around me. She said the consciousness question means to your physically pass out. So she was being very strict. So all the terms and meanings on your guides plus everywhere else on the internet do not count.
