B & W PIP Self-Test vs. DWP PIP questionnaire

I do not anticipate being assessed for PIP until October 2015 at the earliest but I like to be prepared. Comparing different guides to PIP I notice that the self-test on this site often gives more options to tick than the “How Your Disability Affects You” that is available to members.

For example, I refer to Question 4 to do with taking nutrition. The PIP form gives three options:

1. Do you use and aide or appliance?
2. Do you use a feeding tube or similar device?
3. Do you need help from another person?

The self-test queries as follows:

a. Can take nutrition unaided. 0 points
2 b. Needs either - (i) to use an aid or appliance to take nutrition; or (ii) supervision to be able to take nutrition; or (iii) assistance to be able to cut up food. 2 points
2 c. Needs a therapeutic source to take nutrition. 2 points
2 d. Needs prompting to be able to take nutrition. 4 points
2 e. Needs assistance to be able to manage a therapeutic source to take nutrition. 6 points
2 f. Cannot convey food and drink to their mouth and needs another person to do so. 10 points

I’m guessing the PIP form only asks the three questions quoted but the HCP and DM look at the claimants answers and apply the descriptors and points system of the self-test. But am I correct…?

On a related matter, is there any sign of a PDF version of the PIP questionnaire for those of use unable to write and anybody who feels the needs to document their issues fully?

As you have guessed the B&W self-test uses the PIP Descriptors that claimants are actually assessed against, the form attempts to translate requirements such as "therapeutic source" into to terms that a claimant may be more familiar with e.g. "feeding tube". I haven't looked at the PIP in detail (I stick to the Descriptors) so I cannot comment on how representative the form is of the Descriptors, but if the ESA form is a guide then it is unlikely to be a 100% interpretation.

All PIP forms issued by the DWP are supposed to have a unique bar code printed on them, the DWP's original stance was that if the bar code was missing then the form would be rejected with the risk that the claim would be closed, as a consequence, no online version of the form has been produced.

Claimants can still produce their submission electronically, by creating additional pages and adding a reference to and from the comment boxes on the form to your answers on the additional sheets.

Gordon,

Thanks for answering both my questions so clearly. The lack of an ESA-style PDF is of concern because I cannot use a pen at all. I could not write "See attached pages" in reply to relevant questions. Moreover, if the ESA form is anything to go by its smaller than A4 making it difficult to attach additional pages of information and documentation for medical sources.

I'll probably have a Master Plan in time :P
