I have just contacted my M.P.'s office and explained the situation.
First thing they are going to do is contact DWP and ask why no-one has contacted me yet and then my M.P. is going to be informed and we are going to decide which is the best route to go down - at the moment I would like it raising with the minister responsible but until my M.P. responds I don't know whether it will be the right route.
I am not going to let this go and if I were the person whose info I am now in possession of, I would be furious and want answers.
I am not ruling out contacting the press; I agree with you that we have suffered more than our fair share of stigmatisation, I just need to see how this proceeds and then a full story can be given.

I do agree with you Gordon.
If the other person involved wishes to take it to the media then it is their right to do so not mine.
I have contacted my M.P. and things are progressing.

Yes this happened to us. Along with all medical info was some bank info . I contacted tribunal service and they got back straight away and was so apologetic.
They were even going to send someone out to collect. We handed it in on hubby's tribunal day.
I myself felt a responsibility to hand them in and not rely on post.

It's sensitive info medical information.

Would presume they have not contacted the other person, as almost the same happened to me, well not as bad, I attended an appeal in relation to a income support claim on attending the appeal I found that all the paperwork they had was relating to my brother, which begs the question of how many decisions are based on the name. My brother was never informed that all his details were given out to persons that were not supposed to see the details of his claim. As an aside my brother and I live in different towns and do not get on with one another but do meet at family gatherings this is how I know they will not contact unless they are forced to.

Update - My M.P. has taken this matter seriously (as should be the case) and within hours had asked the ICO to investigate the case and also has written to Iain Duncan Smith reporting the "serious data protection breach" and voiced my concerns.

One aspect to this which I feel is vital, is that the other person concerned has the right to be informed, and my M.P. has asked this to be confirmed by IDS, I await a reply.

I was finally contacted by DWP Monday morning (long 3 hours) and it is very noticeable how differently you are treated when something serious has happened their end. I was even given the full name of the person I was speaking to - up until now no-one in DWP/JC+ has been willing to give me more than a first name!

I have been told that I will be fully informed of how the investigation is progressing and the outcome and they reassure me that the other person will be informed.

I have been told: "its unacceptable", will be dealt with "seriously and formally", and could have "serious repercussions" for the person responsible. Time will tell how this pans out but I would like to say to everyone that should anything like this happen to them, do not disregard it, inform your M.P. as soon as possible.
