Contributory ESA but asking for bank statements

I am on CESA no income top ups etc and I got a letter asking about savings etc - I wrote back and said that I still had savings of over £16K and was only claiming contributory ESA - the letter was obviously not received I guess because I go another one asking for the information saying I had not replied. So I phoned up and the chap on the phone said I had to send in bank/saving statements etc to prove I had savings of over £16K which seems absurd.

Its very kind of them to check that I might be entitled to income related benefits but surely a simple signed statement from me or a confirmation over the phone from me that I have more than the £16K should be enough?

I am waiting for a phone call back but wondered whether this was normally required - I don't remember ever doing it before

The DWP internal mail system is incredibly slow and it can often take 10 days or more for something you have sent to actually reach the right department, also, letters are regularly lost or sent to the wrong office, so it is not unusual for a claimant to receive a second letter.

Unless this second letter specifically requests that you send bank statements then you do not need to at this time, simply complete it as before and return it to the DWP, hopefully this one will actually get to the right address.

FoxyLady, please let us know how you get on, as I've seen a few other people on CB ESA who've been recently contacted about savings etc and I'm wondering If this is part of a new trend with the DWP.

Hi - thanks for replies - I did get the telephone call back and he said there was no need to send bank statements, my confirmation on the phone was fine (and the letter would have been fine but no record of it - it was sent about 2/3rd Feb so they should have had it.)

It just shows that the advisors that you initially contact don't really know what they are talking about, because the first guy was insisting that bank statements would be needed and I could take them down in person to the job centre (!?) It was only because I asked him to check with his supervisor that he agreed to arrange a phone back. (I only knew to do this by reading about this as an option on this website - so thanks for that info !)
