WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT PERMITTED WORK?

I was hoping you could shed some light on it.

Permitted Work fills me with dread, like I want to do it or try it but I keep thinking I will get penalized for it.

Especially if I have to go to The Job Centre, I am a bit paranoid of them TBH.

BTW I get DLA and ESA Support Group, just wanted to see what I can do.

[Mod Comment : As you can see I have edited you post from block capitals to lower case.

This is because block capitals can come across as shouting to members that use screen readers.

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

Can I ask you not to post in capitals as it causes problems for members who use text to speech software.

There is a guide to Permitted Work (PW) in the ESA section. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1

The primary issue you need to resolve is whether your doing PW will conflict with the limitations that you stated on the ESA50, as a deliberately silly example; if you took a job delivering the mail and stated that you had problems with Mobility then this would likely be a red flag.

If you can perform PW without raising concerns then you should consider doing so, many claimants do and it may help your conditions.

Hi s,

Welcome to Benefits and Work :)

You can carry out Permitted Work whilst in receipt of ESA in The SG.

However, you would have to inform ESA as only they can decide if any work that you wish to do would be classed as Permitted Work.

You are also allowed to work whilst in receipt of DLA.

The possible downside is that The ESA Assessor will be aware of any Permitted Work that you have done at your next ESA reassessment, and your SG Award may be in danger if any of the activities involved in The Permitted Work were in direct contadiction to the stated limitations that gave you the SG Award.

Likewise, with DLA, even though you can work whilst receiving DLA or PIP, if any of the actions involved with the work contradicted the disabilities that gave you your DLA Awards they could be in danger also.

An over the top example of this would be a Claimant who receives ESA SG and DLA Mobility for limitations with walking/mobilising taking a job such as leaflet distribution which would involve a lot of walking.

See : Permitted Work

There is also a Guide on Permitted Work about a third of the way down this page : ESA Claims Guides

hi, thanks for the replies and i am sorry about the caps on my original message,

i was wondering how i would go about getting a permitted work form as i am a bit worried about using the phone to ask,

also i looked at the permitted work rules and it stated that if you get income support and receive a disability premium that anythng over 20£ a week will be taken from me, is this true? and is income support the same as esa support group/dla

i was hoping to keep all my earnings even if i go over the 20£ a week, i was hoping to build up my hours gradually and earn the full amount without being penalised? is that possible?

and would they know ho many hours we are working and what kind of work we are doing?

Are you on ESA or IS as the rules are completely different?

Income Support merely a disregard for the first £20 earned (if applicable), any income above the £20 will be deducted £ for £ from your benefit.

If you are on ESA then you can get a PW form from the DWP office that handles your claim, the simplest way is to phone them, but if this is a problem for you then you can make the request in writing it will just take longer for it to be processed.

The PW form asks you about the work you are planning to do and they can ask for payslips to confirm what you are doing.

thanks gordon,

i am on esa, support group with premiums also dla, i thought income support was part of that but i guess i was wrong,

you say that the job centre will need to know what kind of work you are planning. i am a bit worried about what work they would deem good or bad, i think as long as i am within the confines of what was written on my application it should be ok, i'm just worried bc i am not sure what that is, i think what i wanted to do would be borderline,

my main goal is to help others like myself and i have been to college 5hrs a week for that, but i dont want to get into trouble. i also think i may be able to manage a call centre maybe, start small hours and then increase slowly, idk if i can do it now or not though and i am very worried about it but i want to try, i hate having nothing to do all day.
