Re PIP was created by ESA Headache
I had a letter earlier this week to inform me that my PIP claim has been passed onto Atos. Just wondering whether all claims are passed on to Atos or the other health provider or sometimes a decision can be made without involving Atos or the other provider?

It is possible for a Decision to be made without the claim being passed to an Assessment Provider (AP), but the claim needs to be based on a fundamental qualification for PIP, for example a double leg amputee would automatically qualify for Enhanced Mobility.

Where there is any requirement for a medical opinion to be made on the claimants eligibility then it will be passed to an AP as the DWP have no in-house medical expertise.

I can't believe it. I only sent my completed PIP claimpack in a couple of weeks ago. The other day I received a letter to tell me that it has been referred to Atos. Received a letter in the post yesterday with a date for a home assessment which is for next week. I didn't ask for a home assessment so not sure why it is being done at home.

I imagined that I would be waiting months to hear from Atos

Hi ESAH,

Yes, they do seem to have speeded the process up !

The fact that they are to carry out a Home Assessment may be in your favour, as they might have accepted that your limitations would preclude you from travelling to and from an Assessment Centre.

Unlike Capita, ATOS are most reluctant to carry out Home Assessments.

The Assessment can be carried out in a room of your choosing, and they should not ask to see around the rest of your home.

However, you may want to show them any aids, appliances and adaptations that you have as a result of your limitations.

You can have someone else with you for support and they can take notes.

Have a look at page 64 onwards of our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page)

Good luck, and please return to let us know how it went.
