Hi
I was wondering - I have my first ever face to face assessment this thursday after my application for PIP. I've never had an assessment face to face before so am unsure what to expect. I have mental health problems rather than physical ones and am worried about how I'm going to explain them/my difficulties. Should I have my copy of the PIP form I filled in in front of me when the assessor comes to my flat - or is that not a good idea?
thanks

Hi ab1000,

Welcome to Benefits and Work :)

Feed back from members who have had a PIP face to face at home indicates that you can choose the room where the face to face is carried out, and they should not wish to "look around" although if you use any aids or adaptations it may in your best interests to show the assessor.

The Assessor should have a copy of your PIP 2 Form with, them, and although you can also have your copy to hand, and even have notes if you have memory problems, you should be cautious on appearing to give your responses from a "script".

You can have a friend, relative or carer present if you wish who may be allowed some input, and they can even take notes.

As you may be aware the face to face will follow the format of a Q & A session rather than a "medical" and most of the questions asked by the assessor will be determined by the the software used to "format" the Q & A session.

You can read what to expect at your PIP face to face from page 70 onwards of our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page)

You can also read the most recent copy of guidance given to PIP Assessors : Here.

I hope it goes well for you on Thursday, and please return to give us an update when you feel up to it !! :)

hi
thanks for the reply and the links - my flat is tiny with my bedroom/living room in one space and a galley kitchen, so I'm not too sure how that's going to work for my assessment with no table/desk/chairs. My mum has said she will be here to help me out.
Part of my problems are to do with bad OCD - so being sent a letter saying the assessor will arrive anytime between 9 and 11 am is already stressing me (I did ring up the phone line to ask if it would be possible to narrow it down because of the 'stuff' /routines etc I have to do....only to be told 'can't you just change your OCD things'.......).

Hi Abby,

I recently went through this process today with my daughter, I would recommend having a copy of the PIP form with you, also can you have someone that can attend the consultation with you. Someone that can take over if you are struggling?

When is your assessment?

Hi J,

Looking at this extract :

"I have my first ever face to face assessment this thursday"

from ab1000's first post, it appears that their face to face is this coming Thursday.

Had my assessment - he was early which unsettled me a bit and I was glad I had my mum with me. He sort of went through some of the questions, but most of it was me trying to explain how my OCD affects what I do. Glad it's over.
