Pip Assessment was created by Jutey
So incredibly nervous and ticked off if I am honest. My DD is 17 and previously received DLA. We have applied for PIP and have the professional coming out on Tuesday. With the claim form I sent all clinical letters, scope reports, letters from all her 5 clinicians her condition is incredibly complex and rare. She was treated at gosh as well as local. Anyway I digress. She is tube fed as she is allergic to all foods bar 3.
Over the years we have met several medical professionals who have zero understanding of her conditions. I am concerned and haven't heard anything complimentary with regards to ATOS. My dd also suffers severe anxiety and is incredibly stoic and downplays her condition in an attempt to fit in and appear normal. Will they allow me to speak for her? How can I best prepare her?
Any help appreciated.

Hi J,

Welcome to Benefits and Work :)

Have a read through : This Post where another member has enquired about their upcoming ATOS PIP Home Assessment.

Yes, you can certainly be present, and you can inform the Assessor on their arrival of the problems that you describe your daughter as suffering.

The Assessor should allow you to give input that helps to explain how your daughter's limitations affect her on a day to day basis.

Remember, even though an understanding and diagnosis of a PIP claimant's medical conditions have importance, it is how the resulting limitations/disabilities suffered as a result of the medical conditions affect them on a day to day basis that may or may not result in a PIP award, more so than the condition itself !!

With regards to ATOS, "Yes" they do have a poor reputation, but you will mostly read on the Internet of claimant's "bad" experiences.

Claimant's who have received a fair, professional assessment seldom bother to advertise the fact on the Internet, or elsewhere.

Good luck, and please let us know how you get on !

Hi J,
Hope your daughters assessment goes well.
I too had heard horror stories, however the Atos health professional came to assess my daughter and found him to be very fair.
My daughter has had DLA for about 28 years (AA before changing to DLA) I applied for higher rates as she needed much more looking after. She too has an extremely rare condition and has gone from j tube feeding to TPN as she has intestinal failure. She also has a very rare Autistic Spectrum Disorder,
Anyway back to her home assessment she was awarded 43 points for daily care and 24 points for mobility which we were very happy with. She won't be assessed again until 2025.
Hope all goes well. X

Thanks for your support really does help to know you are not alone.

The appt itself was ok the conversations were difficult in the respect that we adopt the ostrich approach you don't think about what you deal with daily only when you are asked to assess do you reflect on how things truly are. The assessor was really nice and fair she actually thought I had underestimated how much care she required. My dd was great I had prepared her and discussed what would happen at the appt etc this helped calm her down. When she struggled I took over the assessor was fine with this approach. The report will go to DWP today and then we wait....

Sorry to hear your dd is in intestinal failure gastro diseases are complete sh*t weasels and poorly understood.
Thanks again for taking the time to respond x

Hi again,
So glad it went well for you both. I do the same and let my daughter answer as much as she can then she looks to me for help. The assessor did say before leaving what we should expect in his opinion, but didn't have final say.

You're right we don't really question how much we actually do for them unless we have to write it all down I just get on with things on a daily basis, we are mothers and that's what we do regardless of age!
Hope you don't have too wait long for the award, ours took just over 2 weeks. X
