My condition got worse - how best to reapply? was created by Private Ryan
Hi all. I receive PIP (thanks in very large part to BenefitsandWork's tremendous "Dummies Guide" handholding me through the pitfalls of the form, it goes without saying!) at standard living and mobility. I have a progressive degenerative neurological condition, rather similar to MS except it's fairly rare. There's no cure or treatment as such, just fiddling about with the side effects, and it's progressing fairly rapidly now but at least nobody usually dies from it.
My question is, when I applied for PIP I could manage to walk with sticks say 50 yards. But these days I'd be lucky to manage even ten yards before aches and discomfort starts setting in and I start wobbling about like someone drunk. So although I was assessed as Standard mobility with 50 metres, I now reckon I qualify under Enhanced mobility at 20 metres. How is the best way to get my PIP reassessed? Do I, errr, phone them (I usually prefer to put absolutely everything in writing!) Do I need to submit a complete new PIP application (I kept a copy of the original so no problem if so)? Or what...??? I've searched but unable to find similar queries so far. TIA!

In the first instance the quickest way to get started is to ring and say you want to report a change of circumstances which means you want to claim for your condition getting worse.
They will send the forms out.
It is like making a new claim. You will need all the info and evidence to show your condition has got worse so you need the extra allowance.
It is good that you have copies of the original as this will help.
Obviously you can use our guides to help you as well.
Glad to know we wer able to help with your claim.

Thanks a lot, that's most helpful. I did rather suspect it would be exactly that - 1) ring them, 2) get forms, and 3) have to make claim all over again in effect. But I was, as you can imagine, wary of making a mistake in tactics that could end up being disastrous (for no obvious sensible reason at all, this being the DWP). Of missing a trick in this bureaucratic chessgame they've turned it into.
The work of B&W is SO vital in pointing out all the hidden pitfalls that wouldn't be immediately apparent, even to a relatively confident or hopefully reasonably competetent applicant. It's hard to praise the work this site does enough, it really is. Long may you continue to defend the poor and the ill from the unashamed evil predation that IDS has set out to instigate. You guys really are a modern day Robin Hood and his band of men - "loved by the good, feared by the bad" as the old children's TV themesong. What's more, IDS as the Sheriff of Nottingham and Cameron as King John make a perfect fit, too...!

Some things you need to consider; the change must have effected your for three months for an award based on the change to be made, you are not required to walk pain free, the legal test is whether you can walk reliably for the majority of days or not, see the PIP Claim guide for more details.

Reporting a Change of Circumstances will result in a full re-assessment of your claim so you will need to complete a new PIP2 in detail and provide evidence to support your claim, even if this is information that you have previously sent.

Hi Kerry

Remember that because a condition worsens does not necessarily mean an increase in the award, we do have a new update to our guide, June 21 v50.

PIP is not awarded because of the condition but rather the limitations that result and prevent a claimant from completing a range of everyday activities. Have a look at our PIP Claim guide for a better understanding of the criteria you will need to meet.
