Cheers for your reply Gordon. She is 20. We were asked about her still needing an appointee when she turned 16 - resulting in my wife continuing as her DWP appointee.

Incidentally, she started getting DLA when she was 15, after a medical - no problem - based entirely on her learning difficulties alone at that time. It should have been much earlier - but nobody ever bothered mentioning DLA to us back then.

I understand they have to check to see if claimants still require an appointee. However, what's baffling here is: they are saying 'we have noticed that Miss Blogs has made a claim for PIP HERSELF. Please could you confirm whether Miss Blogs still requires an appointee.

Anyway I still find it baffling and will be treating this whole process with caution. I wont be surprised if it comes up at some point: 'I see Miss Blogs has managed to make her own claim for PIP.'

I will just assume that these bastards are trying to stitch-up my daughter even at this early stage. And so I will prepare and respond fully to mitigate against this. Many thanks.

Hi Buster!
Try and stay calm(easier said than done) i don't think its a deliberate ploy to stitch you up!
Although its bl**dy annoying and very stressful.
Some people just go through the motions when doing a job, others work hard and get it right, some don't know their ar*se from their elbow and don't forget the good old computer generated stuff.
Sometimes its just pot luck;but all the evidence you need to succeed in the claim is there "your daughter." What is due to her will come, you may have to jump through more hoops but
you'll get there!
Regards Matchseller.

Hi there, any advice regarding the following would be most welcome.

We have now sent to DWP my daughter's PIP form along with quality supporting evidence to back up her limitations due to her being blind and having a lifelong learning disability and other conditions (including GP and consultant's letter stating travelling on public transport is unsuitable).

As it's been almost 3 weeks we rang the DWP; the bloke on the phone suggested trying ATOS - for any news. So, my wife (appointee) spoke to ATOS asking if our daughter's claim had been looked at. Their guy on the phone all of a sudden attempted to book my daughter an appointment for an assessment some 56 miles. At this point I took hold of the phone and made it clear we are not requesting an assessment - we are merely asking for an update.

To which he said OK I see; we agreed that we should just wait for a letter then and take things from there. Although, I did make it quite clear we would be surprised if you even had to attend an assessment - as she ain't gonna get any better.

Rightly or wrongly? I also made it clear, if her claim is not going to be handled correctly - then we will not hesitate to contact our MP. Do you have any advice - my own view is we'll just wait and see what they ask of us?

There again will these people attempt to say we have now refused an assessment - or am I just being paranoid. Many thanks.

The PIP legislation requires a claimant receive seven days written notice of an appointment unless they can specifically accept one at shorter notice, so it should not be treated as a refusal, although you might want to have a look at the following.

Hi Buster
I think the DWP are in the unenviable situatiion of trying to administer an unworkable system with insufficient resources.
Did the DWP say they had requested an assessment from ATOS?
They should be the ones to decide if they have enough info to do a paper decision not ATOS.
I'm glad to hear you standing up for yourselves and your daughter.

Hi all

A quick question: is there any evidence out there either anecdotal or by recorded data to suggest that officially recorded PIP assessments make any difference to the awards being made compared to non recorded assessments? Many thanks. This is something we will be thinking of asking for if we (daughter) are called in - which now seems highly likely.
