DLA TO PIP questions was created by Jianne1274
Hi everyone ...I am currently on dla lifetime award enhanced for both ...been invited or more like ordered to apply for pip..I have a few questions if that's o.k...firstly will it help that three years ago I was successfully transferred from the incapacity benefit highest level you could get to esa support group without a medical will this be of any relevance? I should say at this point I have been on disability since I was a child and all of my working life I will be 42 this year.Much emphasis seems to be put on the word safely on dla I remember using that word a lot in my esa application..so if I can not go out without the help assistance or presence of another person because I have a unstable C spine and the fact that I cannot under any circumstances get up if I fall ..I require being lifted in by two or more persons is this highly relevant ??? Three years ago I was reassed for esa and my doctor wrote me a short letter explaining my situation and on that letter she put I could move no more than 25 meters on a good day ..now since than due to my condition not Improving and in fact getting worse I am unable to walk 25 metres unaided by another person (I cannot use aids) it is significantly less now ..I can move 15 to 20 metres on a good slowly and whilst in agonising pain..on a bad day a few steps is all I can manage ..doing this leaves me exhausted for days..I have more questions but I will leave it at that for now...Oh I also suffered a stroke as a child affecting the left side of my body and my spinal rhabdomysarcoma (Cancer) affected my right side particularly my right arm this is where most of my disability comes from..

If your transfer from IB to ESA was three years ago then I doubt that the it will be considered due to the age, the fact that you did not have a face to face is unlikely to be a factor as PIP and ESA have different criteria.

PIP breaks Mobility down into two activities; the Going Out activity looks at a claimants ability to plan and follow a route due to the mental health, cognitive or sensory issues that they might have, physical issues are not normally considered. The second activity, Moving Around looks at the distance a claimant can walk. Have a look at the PIP Claim guide for more information.

In particular you should refer to the section that covers "reliably" and "on the majority of days".

If you have further questions then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Thankyou for you reply ....I was just wondering for the question that ask about planning a journey...well yes I could plan it ..but under no circumstances could I undertake it...is it worth me mentioning that ..or solely relying on the 20 metre question for my 12 points...in theory I should be still eligible for the enanched..but we all know it's not that simple..I definitely could not move 20 metres safely and reliably and for most if the time ( can't get up if I fall...unstable c Spine and I have sensory problems with my feet ..not to mention the pain and fatigue) it's how to phrase things for the question s that is a problem..would it be worth using similar phrasing to my esa form ..I have copies...sorry for all the questions I'm sure I will have many more questions as they come to me ..heads in a spin at the minute

Planning a route and following it are covered by different Descriptors.

You need to complete the PIP2 as you feel that you are limited and argue why you meet the Descriptors.

You can use what you included on your ESA form, but you should be aware that the criteria and distances are different, also, terms such as "reliably" and "for the majority of days" are not defined to the same level in ESA as they are for PIP.

Thanks for the reply..could you please expand on how the descriptors differ ..between the two ..it is very confusing because some of the questions are quite similar...between esa and pip .but require different phrased answers..the fact that 3 years ago I could walk no more than 25 metres on a good day and my mobility has got much worse..and for myself the safety aspect is huge factor ..surely they must take this into account??
I am relying heavily on my g.p who did my esa letter for support with my conditions from 1983/5 rare c spine cancer subsequent chemo and stroke which affected my mobility dexterity balance cordination ....and the problems those left me with..I was then told I had a unstable c spine and to be really really careful as one fall accident could prove to result in paralysis...now as I stumble and trip all the time hence why I can't go out alone..I can't get up at all if I fall I need two other people at least to pick me up as I can offer no assistance is it worth my pressing this point ??? Due to my safety and those around me...

Planning a route is the process of working out how to get from one place to another, perhaps from your home to the High Street where you live, the route does not need to be the most efficient but if you could only come up with one that took an hour when it should only be 10 minutes, then it would suggest that you can plan one to an acceptable standard.

It must be a route that takes account of natural obstructions, for example if you have to cross a river, then it must be at a bridge, it also must be a safe route so roads should be crossed at suitable places,

This is primarily a cognitive function, although those with sensory issues would also have problems.

Following a route is your being able to follow a planned route, so using the same example, it would be you actually going from your home to the High Street.

Mental Health issues may prevent you from leaving your house in the first place, cognitive or sensory problems could mean that you could not navigate the route, for example you are unable to relate the route instructions to the actual roads you need to use or if you are blind then you could not see where to go.

Although planning a route does not require you to be able to follow it, you can certainly argue that following a route requires you to be able to plan one. For example; if a road was closed due to road works, you would need to be able work out a new route to your destination.

The criteria for ESA are sufficiently different that you should not rely on scoring points for PIP where you scored them for ESA.
