DLA reconsideration just before appeal! was created by jerishybred
My daughter is profoundly deaf and from December 2012 DWP decided that she would lose her middle rate care component and reduced it to low rate. We appealed straight away asking DWP to reconsider, and the decisions officer stated there was insufficient evidence, so low rate it was.
We waited almost 8 months for an appeal date to be given; in the meantime my daughter won a place at university having gained 4 good A levels (despite being held back by her previous 'hearing support' school who thought it a positive and an end result if a profoundly deaf person gained 5 GCSE's). We only realised our daughter's full potential when she moved to another school to do A Levels. Anyway rant over........! We had contacted welfare rights who agreed to support our appeal and we appealed for middle rate care plus low rate mobility(my daughter has had traumatic experiences using buses due to impatient bus drivers so i drive her to and from uni.
She was given a Disabled Student's Assessment (DSA) and I sent part of this assessment off as extra evidence. We recently got a letter saying that her appeal hearing has been cancelled as DWP has reconsidered the extra evidence and my daughter has been given both the mid rare care and the low rate mobility!
So I am writing this for two reasons....it may seem a struggle to complete all the appeal forms, worry about the appeals process etc but if you persevere using the excellent guidance from this website you can get the right result!
The second reason is for those parents out there who have 'hearing impaired' children/ teenagers and are worried about how they will cope as they get older... well they can, it's not easy and a lot of obstacles will be in their way but it can be achieved.
