Hi there, if I get a phone assessment can someone speak for me and explain how I am etc, as I have bpd and get very stressed and upset, and please can anyone tell me what a "paper based assessment is?
Also I had no new medical evidence to send in so I sent in old bpd diagnosis letter from 2016 and 3 year old docs letters saying how I am and stuff, they state items to DO NOT Send being letters from doctors or evidence we have seen before...... So basically I'd have nothing to send in to support my claim, I've been on Pip since 2014 , and every 2-3 years they try to decrease what I receive, I lost 100.00 of it 3 years ago as they said I was okay with people and socialising, even though rarely go out I cannot socialise I'm 62 and have a load of other problems which I'm so tired of trying to "prove" to them in each face to face, they don't understand bpd especially in a face to face so on a telephone appointment il not be okay.

Hi Hedera-helix

If you have an official appointee who manages your benefits then that person can speak on your behalf. For someone to be an appointee there is paperwork to be filled out and for it to be agreed. Information about this is available on the government website
www.gov.uk/become-appointee-for-someone-claiming-benefits

If you need help from a friend, relative or professional at your assessment, you can say so on the form and give the reasons why. How much they are allowed to talk will depend on the assessor - they certainly won't be able to speak the whole time. Assessors need to be able to judge what a claimant can or can't say.

When a claimant sends in a review form they can ask for paper-based assessment (ie an assessment is carried out with no face to face or telephone contact with the claimant. The DWP will not necessarily agree to this. It helps if a claimant has a letter from a GP or other medical professional supporting the use of a paper-based assessment because of the risk of causing 'overwhelming psychological distress' to a claimant if any other type of assessment was used.

Many people are in the same position as you and have no new medical evidence. Try not to be stressed about this. You cannot magic up evidence you do not have and that should be recent enough. They might want to know if you have had any contact with medical professionals in the last three years.

If you have any further questions do come back and ask.

Hi hedera-helix [Ivy I presume] please just ignore the 'do not send etc' line. It is just put there to be a stumbling block and it is not anything to take notice of.
Best wishes,
Denby

Thanks so much for all that, unfortunately I've sent it in but I did put the name of my freind on the more information page at the back.
Can she just say so on the day when she comes with me, and if I get phone appointment. I'm not sure we have time to fill in forms and then get an appointment to be visited by the dwp etc, and the whole process of it all that I just read on your link, thankyou for that,
Also don't they look at your previous reviews so they can see how you are and have been. Sorry again too many questions. Just one more, I sent review form in on 20th of Dec how long do you think it will be before they ask me to attend appointment. Thankyou again for replying so quickly it's just good to be able to communicate with someone and be reassured a bit

Hi hedera-helix

I am not sure if the assessors are yet doing face to face assessments, the majority of assessments are either by phone or on paper depending on what supporting evidence you have sent in.

Your friend can be with you when you have the assessment, but the assessors may not let your friend speak for you.

Unfortunately they don't usually look at your previous review as they want to know how you are now and how your condition affects you, what medication you are on, what specialist help you get.

We cannot give you a time frame as to how long it will take as there is a backlog, it used to take 6-8 weeks depending what region you live in.

Let us know how you get on.

Dear hedera-helix, may I offer a strong recommendation you can action straight away for peace of mind? Please immediately contact DWP, plus the assessment provider the minute you are sent an appointment, to ask for it to be recorded. Also if you and your friend can arrange it, make your own recording, see the recent newsletter update on here for comments on this. The thing is, if you get upset during the assessment it will be on the recording, so they will be unable to get away with trying to say you were fine, which has happened to many people including our daughter. With the recording we disproved the untruthful assessor and won. Please don't have an assessment without a recording.
best wishes,
