TOPIC: Am I classed as vulnerable? I’m confused & worried

Am I classed as vulnerable? I’m confused & worried 2 months 3 days ago #246214

HI Rachel ,
Sad to hear of your illness and how worried you are. I am sure comments on here from others will help you.

I received a text message from the NHS last Sunday evening (22nd March) as follows:-
NHS Coronavirus Service: We have identified that you're someone at risk of severe illness if you catch Coronavirus. Please remain at home for a minimum of 12 weeks.................

I am 70 plus , receiving pip for personal care and 10 points for disability. I have many health issues but the main one is Crohns Disease which was diagnosed at age 20 and I had my first of many many operations. I have had pneumonia and sepsis on 3 occasions and was in a medically induced coma.
In my area no supermarkets have delivery slots available. Though some say they are still giving them I have tried and tried and have not seen any evidence that they are.
There is one that says they are receiving information about the most vulnerable but the site says I am not on their list and invite me to ring a number which is permanently engaged. Also they have stopped monitoring emails. I am actually lucky because i did get a delivery on the 12th March from them but there was no stockpiling it was just my normal shop. A neighbour popped round on Monday and left a box of bread , milk, potatoes and my husband and I had a little weep when we saw things he was desperate for and a bag of pasta which I needed . I have Short Bowel Syndrome and my diet is almost completely different from his.
We are well off compared to others but I can fall ill very fast and have to go into hospital and I really do not want to take a bed that is needed by someone younger and their whole future in front of them.

I went on government web site as my arthritis means I have my grandson as carer. If there is a total shutdown I class myself as vulnerable. However along with your problem I do not fit the government criteria as vulnerable. But think you should. Your GP should assist you. I too have had no letter from GP.

There are 2 groups the very vulnerable a list can be found on gov.uk of those considered vulnerable with letters coming this week.

Then there are the more at risk those over 70 and the with underlying health problems

best wishes

Dear Rachel
We are so sorry to hear that you are feeling so alone.
The important thing is , is that you try to get help.
So, have you thought of contacting your local MP ?
There are schemes being set up & local 'hubs' as we speak, by local authorities to help people in need at this difficult time. Although you may not fall within the category that the government has set up to describe 'vulnerable' people, you still need help if you do not have anyone in the family to support you. Some authorities have started distributing leaflets to inform people of the support. If you explain that you are unable to leave home due to your own vulnerabilities as of recent hospital admission/illnesses etc, then I really cannot see them refusing help or at the least being able to point you to someone who can.
So, get hold of your local MP if you can.
Good Luck.

Churches are taking referrals from services to assist vulnerable people, either get in take with a local church and ask which churches are involved or the LA or CAB.
If you have recently had any contact with LA or social worker you may well get a welfare check and they can then put you into contact with a group that will help. There is help its just a matter fo finding it which isn't to difficult fortunately .
Lots of best wishes
