PIP Reconsideration or not? was created by Elle
Hi everyone

I would be grateful for some advice.

I have today received my PIP letter at long last after a year of waiting to say I have been awarded the Standard rate of care and mobility. I had previously been on DLA at medium care and high rate mobility. I am also on enhanced ESA.

Is it worth me asking them to reconsider or is this too risky for losing the standard rate they have already awarded me? My disability means I am very dependent on the mobility element of the award and without it I will be remain mostly housebound again.

Many thanks

Hi E,

Welcome to Benefits and Work :)

There is some risk involved in requesting a Mandatory Reconsideration (MR) / Appeal.

However, this "risk" is dependent on how "safe" your current PIP awards are.

i.e. Did you just scrape in on the Standard PIP award, or where you just borderline on receiving an Enhanced award.

Basically, it is only a decision that you can make.

You could enlist the support of a Welfare Adviser at CAB or the like, who may be able to "risk assess" your current awards :

Where to get advice

Failing that, you could review our PIP Claims Guide and your application to see whether there is any information that you omitted which may have resulted in the Standard Rate award :

PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page)

If you haven't already done so, you could try our PIP Self Test, and score your self very tightly to see what the result is :

PIP Self Test

If you do decide to request an MR, you only have one month from the date of the PIP Decision Notice letter to do so.

There is a PIP MR/Appeals Guide on this page :

Further information on MR/Appeals can be found below :

Disability Rights UK Factsheet - Appeals and Mandatory Reconsiderations.

Please reply to this topic if you have any further queries.
