Hi, Is it legal to record (with a dictaphone) a PIP face to face assessment in your own home? If so, do you have to tell the assessor you are recording the conversation?

You can make legally a covert recording of the assessment using whatever device you choose although using an analogue device (tape or CD) would be better. Be aware, if the assessor discovers that you are making the recording then they will ask you to stop and if you refuse, curtail the appointment and treat you as failing to participate.

If you want to make an overt recording, then you need permission in advance and you will need to make two simultaneous recordings direct to tape of CD, you cannot use a digital device.

Thanks Gordon.

Out of interest, whats the reason behind not using a digital recorder? and having to use tapes or CD?

It's about the claimant editing the content and detecting when it has been done!!

You may consider a witness present who can jot down an account of the meeting.
I would highly recommend you have some method covering yourself as some of these people are out and out liars as we have discovered 1st. hand.
