Hello,

I have just found out today that I'll be having a face-to-face for my PIP review on 23rd August, which is next week, and also right in the middle of when I will be having my full assessment for autism.

Since I completed and returned my review form in May, I have been diagnosed with diabetic nephropathy and started on medication for that; I have also had a severe bleed in my left eye due to proliferative diabetic retinopathy which has left me partially sighted, and of course, the above-mentioned assessment for autism, which will be kicking off next week with the first of three appointments.

I'm worried that as all of this happened since I returned the review form, and was therefore not included on it, will it still be taken into account if I talk about it at the assessment?

To say I am scared to death right now would be a massive understatement :(

Many thanks in advance.

Whilst you should obviously talk about these new problems at the assessment, I would also write them down and specifically how they impact on your completing the PIP activities.

Write a letter and send it to the Assessment Provider. Send a copy to the DWP office dealing with your claim and lastly take a copy to the assessment and ask the assessor to read it and include it in your file before they start the interview.

Hi Gordon,

I was actually contacted about my face-to-face by telephone (even though I specifically wrote on my AR1 form that I struggle with using the phone due to severe anxiety and depression and wished to be contacted by letter only) so all I have is a time, date, and which town the assessment will be taking place in (not even the town that I live in, either, but a different one which is about thirty miles away).

Do you have any idea when/if I will receive a letter with the full address and postcode for the assessment centre itself so that I can actually find the place? The phone call I had from ATOS was on 14th August so I expect it may take a few days for a letter to arrive. but it would be very useful to know if they are actually going to send one, or if they expect me to walk around the streets of a town I have never been to before, searching for something that looks like an assessment centre

Sorry if I come across as wound up... all of this is pretty stressful and terrifying for me, especially at the moment with so many other things going on as well :(

Many thanks in advance.

Hi again Gordon,

Sorry for posting again so quickly, but there was something I've been thinking about which I wanted to clarify.

I understand that a paper-based assessment can be done for PIP if a) the medical evidence you send with your claim form is recent (less than two years old) and there is enough of it, and b) if having to attend a face-to-face would result in harm (either physical or mental or both) occurring to the claimant as a result.

Relating to a) all of the medical evidence I sent along with my AR1 was/is less than two years old, and there was so much of it that the Post Office classed it as a small parcel when my Mum took it along there to send it off. And relating to b) I was admitted to an inpatient psychiatric ward for 10 days in May this year following two suicide attempts (copies of all hospital discharge paperwork relating to those admissions was sent along with my AR1). Those suicide attempts occurred as a very direct result of having to go through this PIP review, which I did explain on the AR1.

So with all that there, have you any idea why I might have been called to a face-to-face anyway?

Many thanks (again) in advance.

Yes, they should confirm the appointment in a couple of days. You can always contact them again by phone for the details.

It is not a question of there being enough evidence it must be relevant evidence. Also, if your conditions are variable then this will make it much more likely that you will have a face to face.

You can contact them to find what information is missing and prevent a Paper Based Review, if you can then supply this then it may mean they change their mind about a face to face but be aware less than 5% of claims are handled through a PBR.
