Hi,
Is anybody able to clarify if an occupational pension counts as earnings with reference to carers allowance?

No it doesn't it is only earned income that is considered.

Hi Gordon

Sorry to bother you, can i ask is a personal pension also exepmt with regards to claiming carer's allowance? is a personal pension the same as an occupational pension, just wondered as hubby on high pip both componenets, just had a hip replacement and needs 2 further joints replaced, and various other mental/pysical problems, and his brother in law recently retired, and we were wondering if he could claim carer's for hubby as he does provide the support to him, is the claiming process quite simple? does the carer have to have a f2f? any help would be greatly appreciate.

Best wishes

As I said it is only earned income that is considered, that means income from the carer working.

Hi Gordon and fellow members

I am hoping you can give some advice please Gordon, my brother claim's carer's allowance for my husband since 7 April 2018, history

Husband has severe osteoarthritis and has had one hip replaced in Apirl 2018 awaiting right knee and right hip replacement, also has prostate cancer, anxiety and depression and is on high rate PIP for daily living and mobility until 2020.

Brother who is carer, retired in April 2018 receives company pension and claimed carer's allowance for my husband as he does have to help him an awful lot as i am in poor health so my brother does it all, he has no other income, however when he retired from work it took 3 months for his company to pay his pension so in affect he received his first company pension in July 2018 backdated to April 2018, he receives approx 740 pounds per calendar month, he then received a new tax code from HMRC after he received his first pension payment and i presume they thought he would get this as a monthly payment where in fact it was for 3 month's, tax code sorted after lengthy conversation with HMRC re only receiving company pension and CA.

Today my brother has received a letter from the DWP saying we are reviewing your benefits and cicumstances you must come to an office interview with date and time Dear ..... we need to talk to you about some changes that may affect your benefits payments, you must be available for this interview and have all of the information listed on page 1 and 2

1 Bring something to prove who you are

2 other things we need to see

bank statements
latests statement from any pension provider
if you are currently working your most recent payslips
details of any savings or investments
details of any property land you own other than where you live
etc etc

obviously quite alarming, do you know Gordon what this is all about, my brother the carer does not earn any money apart from his personal pension from his employer and CA

could it be because of the first pension payment being delayed by his employer and then receiving 3 months payments

has this been flagged up by HMRC

He has nothing to hide nor does my husband but any advice would be so gratefull, is it best to just answer the questions posed, will they pry into his bank details, transfers etc are they allowed to, we are completely at a loss and don't know how to approach this situation, thanks so much

Best Wishes

Your brother can ring for further information, if he has not yet reached State Retirement Age then they may believe that the pension is earned income.
