I am in the ESA support group but have made some improvement in my stability and wellbeing over the last few months. I don't feel able to handle a return to work but would be able to take on some freelance work, I work as a mentor/coach and would feel well enough to take on a few clients a week as a way to help gearing up for a full return to work.
I've read all the guidelines about permitted earnings and that it is possible to do self employed work under ESA. What isn't clear is if the DWP only accept your takings, or accept takings - expenses.
So if I take £30 for a 1-1 client appointment, then at least £10 of that will have to go on room hire, £2 on the bus there, and there will be other expenses e.g. printing out materials, buisness phone contract etc.
So it would look like I've earned £30 but in reality much more like £15.
What are the guidelines around this, and how do others handle it? What do you think would be the best plan of action so I don't get into trouble? I'm really not ready to return to work full time but I do think this could be a support for me and my recovery.
It should be possible for you to have reasonable expenses deducted from your earnings but you need to arrange this in advance and get agreement from the DWP.
Are you happy that this work does not contradict the reasons that you have been awarded the Support Group?
