The Communicating activity is primarily about the physical problems that you have hearing and speaking although you can also score if you have a cognitive impairment of mental health issues.

I would not expect the problems you had with counting down and calculating the change to have helped you score for this activity,

“Communication support” means support from a person trained or experienced in communicating with people with specific communication needs, including interpreting verbal information into a non-verbal form and vice versa.

Have a look at our PIP Claim for a more detailed understanding of the requirements for this activity.

Prompting and a need for notes are not covered by the Communicating Descriptors.

Hi it is really difficult and confusing trying to find out how to get the correct points for your illnesses and disabilities. A few months a go we had to go to see our CAB Advisor, I was surprised how he dealt with the paperwork. He reminded me to not to worry to much but to look at the main descriptors where they had awarded the points and look at the totals. Then to see how many points I needed and to re- look at the descriptors where I felt I got lower points and request a reconsideration to increase of two or more points which would award the correct benefit level. I was angry on at least three descriptors where I had been awarded 0 points and felt I should have had points, but the CAB advisor said it was best to concentrate on the descriptor to get the points I needed and then went after other descriptors where he felt my illness/disability qualified for increase of the points already awarded..

I did also have to re-look at the step to step guides on Benefit and Work and I was reminded what the descriptor was truly asking. Sadly with illness and disability everything gets muddled but the Benefit and Work step by step guides are truly helpful just a lot of the times we forget to re look at them.

So I suppose my advice would be and from what I learnt from my this website and my CAB Advisor is to try and remind yourself what the descriptor is really asking, and give the best example, there maybe areas where you are due 4 points instead of 2 points. Or where symptoms fit better to a different descriptor, It is very difficult but also look at the step to step guides as they will clearly say which descriptors are physical and which are for mental health. It is easy to muddle them together.
I wish you all the best.
