16 year old son going from DLA to PIP advice was created by Quirkybookworm
Hello there, well the dreaded time has come for us to fill out our sons PIP forms now that he is 16. He is on the autistic spectrum and has fainting episodes due to high anxiety and has recently had major scoliosis surgery, he’s always been awarded middle to high care DLA since he was diagnosed at aged 4, but we are aware this could all change with PIP.
Our son doesn’t see doctors for his autism as such (accept recently for blood tests for fainting episodes) but he is in mainstream school with a 20 hour 1 to 1 and education health care plan so will be sending all this off with our forms, as it’s the only evidence to support his autism as such but the school are willing to support us as much as we need so will hope for the best.
His major scoliosis surgery is a bit of a dilemma though, he is a year post op and has been rodded the full length of his spine, this was all very traumatic and added has added to his anxiety, but although he has had corrective surgery, he has some issues such as pain in hips, can’t stand Mobile for two long and other issues that need to be discussed with his surgeon but the next date to see his surgeon is 31st December and the PIP forms have to be filled in and sent within the next two weeks, so any ideas for this ongoing medical issue with my son aand how I’m suppose to explain these issues for PIP when we haven’t actually seen his surgeon to get them looked into until after the PIP assessment? Thanks:)

All you can do is explain the problems he has with his Mobility now. On a more general note have you spoken to his GP about any information they can provide in support of his claim? Does he have a formal diagnosis of ASD?
See our PIP Claim guide for details of the criteria he is being assessed against. He needs to be able to complete each of the PIP activities "reliably" and "on the majority of days", these terms are explained in the guide.
Are you your son's appointee? They are now being treated as an adult and will be expected to interact with those assessing him directly, so if this is going to be an issue then you should apply for an appointeeship.

Hi, thanks for reply, I have been made my sons appointee and was told when I was interviewed for this that I can speak on his behalf if he has a face to face assessment?
My son has a formal diagnosis when he was 4 years old which we have all the paperwork for. He has doesn’t really see his gp much unless he’s actually sick, not for his autism anyway, when he was younger he has seen various people such as speech and language therapist, autism outreach workers and even a psychologist to deal with his fainting episodes, all of which he hasn’t seen for many years. He is now having fainting episodes after a few years again which has been documented with his gp and has undergone blood tests for recently but that’s the only thing he has currently seen his gp for. He is under a different specialist for his scoliosis surgery.
I have got the downloaded members guides and will look through them to help with our application. Just trying to get everything filled in and sent off in time, thought we would have longer then two weeks:S

You can ask for a two-week extension of you require it, there's a phone number on the letter that accompanied the PIP2.
