Occupational Therapist Assessment was created by weasley
Help please. I was recently referred by my GP to my mental health unit for an assessment regarding my increased anxiety and other mental health concerns. I was put through almost the same process as a PIP Assessment, indeed the Therapist made reference to my bodily functions, etc, but the report is blindingly flawed, some of the things in it I never even talked about, I went to see my GP the next day and he was bemused as to why I had been put through this process (2.5 hours), it went on for, as I was not referred by him on any matter concerning my physical health. The ridiculous fact is, that my mental health condition when discussed by the Disciplinary team (Psychologist/Psychiatric consultations) was diagnosed the same, however, in this report is a new diagnosis called "Malingering". When I found out what this was I was overwhelmed and felt like I had been subjected to "entrapment". I am challenging this vigorously, with the help of an advocate. Have you heard of anyone else being subjected to this aberrant situation? By the end of the process I was mentally drained and felt ill, I told the OT this, but the OT just kept going.

I'm afraid this is not something that we see reported on the forum, certainly, I haven't seen any posts about it that I remember, perhaps other members can comment.

Hello Catfishman,
Have you been able to discover the OT's qualifications? They may be an physical OT with little or no MH training rather than an RMNurse. I'm afraid CMHT assessments are largely a box ticking exercise like PIP. Due to cuts any excuse to discharge you will be taken/no care plan. They usually say you have an untreatable borderline personality disorder. Assessments used to be only carried out by a CPN but now anyone will do. I've had ignorant & abusive comments too (we have to work etc etc. ) You were lucky to get to see the assessment report: keep an advocate on hand & don't go on your own. My last shambles was done by a social worker with no medical qualfs or counselling skills. She hadn't even read the referral. She'd fabricated the suicidal section as I didn't feel safe talking to her about it, she called me a liar twice & she had wrongly recorded the medication which is pretty serious. It took a 3 month fight to see the records which I needed for PIP.
With the help of your advocate you need to keep pressing them; discuss concerns with the manager then escalate. If you want a care plan keep fighting for it politely. The OT may have wrongly thought you wanted help with benefits rather than desperate to get help for deteriorating MH. Get the GP to request that you to see the CPN. You may wish to complain to the OT's professional body if you have evidence that they falsified the records which is quite serious.
I've found MIND & Survivors Trust much more supportive. I've used PIP money for private counselling & support. Increasingly CMHT are refusing to provide letters for benefits anyway.
Please hang on in there: another route to getting help is needing the Crisis Team but the standard is very variable.
Best wishes Terrified

So sorry for the late reply, I am not being rude to you, please accept my apologies. This whole thing has made me so ill, they make you feel dirty for asking for help to contain your mental health, I have worked for 38 years, medically retired due to mental health, they make you feel so empty and helpless, I came out of there feeling worse than when I went in. It felt like "entrapment" I went to see someone concerning my deterioration in my mental health, especially my anxiety which is crippling me, my GP referred me for help with possible CBT that was the only reason I was referred! The OT ended up putting me through a 2.5-hour grilling like it was a PIP assessment, she was playing good cop bad cop, when I got her full report I just sobbed because the majority of it was nonsense and was never said by me. When the assessment commenced she asked if I would object to a trainee being present which I said no I do not object. The report contains many references by the OT as "we" observed the client saying XYZ etc. I contacted a well known mental health charity and they said the trainee had no input other than to observe. I was eventually re-diagnosed with 3 mental illnesses and a new diagnosis called "Malingering Disorder". I had no information with the letter from my Phyctric team, just this new diagnosis. When I contacted Rethink Mental Health they were so helpful and sent me information regarding this. When I read what it meant I was devastated, totally broken, my integrity was shattered. I am pursuing this through CWP PALS, and I have been supported by my GP who asked me if I would like a second opinion, which is in the process of being set up, you are spot on with the borderline personality disorder being diagnosed, for the last 15 years I have been treated for Bipolar Disorder. I have to go through the complaints procedure, I'm not sure it will achieve anything, as in my view the mice hide in the same nest, but my benefit PIP may be in danger, I don't know. I would welcome your views.
