I am thinking of applying for DLA on mental health grounds ( recurrent depressive disorder).Anyone got any tips?

Planning to get supporting letter from GP and psychiatrist, and use the Benefits and Work Guides obviously.

(Probably only going to go for low rate mob and care.)

hello

I applied for DLA before i discovered this site & was awarded High Rate Care, & Low Mobility. I also have mental health conditions, me/cfs, & bad knee after 3/4 miniscus removed.

only tip i can give is to be as detailed as possible on how ur mental health conditions affect your everyday life & any help or care you get. (motivating you to get up, washed/dressed, cook, eat etc or whatever applies to your own conditions) All you can do is be honest & describe the impact it has on your whole life. I didnt include any gp or psychiatrist reports, but i dont know if they wrote to them. i would however include them in the future now iv discovered this site & their wonderfull guides.

good luck

martin

Hi, i applied for dla and was turned down twice before i had to go to a tribunal this was with mental health issues. The guides are excellent, download the dla one, and get supporting evidence and fill out the questionnaire as best you can. Good luck. It is all about the care you need not the illness itself.

If you are not happy with the decision you get you can always ask for a reconsideration from another decision maker, and if not happy with that you can appeal. I had to go through a tribual for DLA as mentioned in my pevious post, and they were really kind, understanding and sympathetic. Don't despair, hang in there with it, sending you warm wishes.

Although it supposed to be based on the care you need rather than the illness or disability itself, I a pretty sure that the decision makers also look at the medication you are taking for your condition as a measure of its severity. Mods please correct me if I am wrong.
