Controlling your bowels was created by Patel

In the guide book under section 10 controlling your bowels and bladder descriptors it says
iii) At least once a month loses control of Bowels so that the claimant cannot control the full evacuation of bowel. (15 points)
vii) Risks losing control of bowels so that the claimant cannot control the full evacuation of the bowel if not able to reach a toilet quickly.(6 pointa).
Support Group Descriptor
[c) At least once a week loses control of the bowel so that the claimant cannot control the full evacuation of the bowel.]
I am confused why descriptor vii scores
6 points which is more worse than descriptor iii scores 15 points.!!
Also vii is the same as support group
descriptor c.
Could someone please clarify why vii scores more points than iii. Shouldnt
it be vice versa.
Further what is the difference between
support group descriptor c and vii.
If someone suffers from involuntary release of bowels on a weekly basis such that if a toilet was not nearbye he loses it then does he qualify for support group. If doctor not aware it happens will colleagues evidence suffice as it is understood you cannot be placed in support group without medical evidence.
Secondly when completing form is it within reason to say where spaces are provided see attached appendix A,B,C.
or should one complete the space and then continue on extra sheet when space runs out.

Hi Patel,
I will try to answer a couple of your queries-

As I read it, descriptor iii) applies if the claimant actually loses control of the bowels at least once a month.

Descriptor vii) applies if the claimant is at risk of losing control of bowels, but does not neccessarily do so

Support group descriptor C needs the claimant to lose control of the bowels once a week (compared to once a month in descriptor iii)

I'm sure one of the lovely mods will be along soon to help

Are you sure that you are using the latest versions of our ESA guides, as Incontinence is descriptor 9 (not 10), in the current WCA test and there is no subsection (iii) an (vii).

The current version of the ESA on Physical Grounds guide is dated November 2011.

If you were so nervous at the medical that you did lose control of your bowels that this would be an instant passport to the Support Group?

Not necessarily.

Although it may be a factor taken into account, it would be need to be considered in the context of the totality of the evidence, ie what has been said on form ESA50, any other independent medical reports (if applicable) and also what is said to the ADA at the medical assessment.
