Hi FEA,

Changes to the Motability Scheme were reported in our Benefit News section here.

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/benefits-news/story/182

The best advice that I could give would be to make personal enquiries to the Motability Scheme. Failing that, try shopping around all the main dealerships, as they sometimes have there own deals on.

cheers

Actually, the changes to Motability cars was on the lease scheme.

It's still possible to use Motability to buy a car on hire purchase. It can be a new car, or a second hand one as long as it's no more than 3 years old, I've just checked this out with Motability before I posted.

For more information contact Motability on 0845 456 4566.

Personally, after leasing from Motability since 1986 I'd recommend the lease scheme. There are lots of cars available for nil deposit including automatics.

However, in the final analysis the choice has to be yours.

There's another problem on the horizon - Motability have said that they are changing their policy about cars and appeals.

Quotations from rightsnet:

Been informed today that Motability will no longer allow DLA appellants to keep their vehicles until their appeal is determined. This is because of the delays in the appeals system which makes it hard for Motability to financially manage if client loses case.

and

Yes, it is true Motability will now take cars away- one client gets his taken tomorrow.
...
This is becoming quite a common problem with our office, and with cases taking up to a year or more to be listed it will affect many more of our clients.

I got my Motability advisor (who hadn't heard of this) to check and she seemed to be told that Motability have some "flexibility" about the implementation of this policy. I'm guessing that they might allow people who they believe can can continue paying for the car to keep it pending the outcome of an appeal.

Still, if appeals are being quoted as taking upwards of 60 weeks (as Message 77314 seems to demonstrate, this is going to be a serious problem for clients and Motability alike.

This is an immediate problem for me, as my Motability lease (my 5th, I think) is coming to an end and I'm wondering if getting a new one with a large advance payment (for an easy-access automatic) is a good idea. My DLA is "indefinite" but with the PIP changeover starting before the 3 years is up, I'm trying to calculate the odds on keeping the car for a full 3 years

DRAT the Daily Mail - and the DWP for feeding it.

Hi carruthers

Thank you for the above post. Its worrying indeed.

I'm taking a bit of a shot at this as I'm still slightly uncertain of the definite proposals. However, I thought the plan was to limit Advanced Paymemts to £2000.00 in order to prevent the lease of top of the range vehicles, such as Range Rovers, BMW's etc.

This limitation of Advance Payment would not apply to those who require adaptments to their vehicles, such as wheelchair access.

This of course would not obviate the problems with leases expiring prior to an Appeal being heard, as you say.

Maybe an issue for our relevant MP's?

Regards

Michael
