AWAY FROM HOME WHILST ON ESA was created by shrinathji
Hi All,

A very quick question i am hoping someone may be able to advise/help me on.

I am aware that you have to inform DWP when you a away from home, even if it is for one night.

However, do you have to tell them where you are going??? Can you just write and tell them that you will be away from the home for xxxx many days???

It took ages to get my husband into the S/G and we would like to go away on holiday abroad(which we have been saving up for a couple of years), which is round about the time of him being reassesed and we are worried sick that going abroad might go against him, although all the necessary provisions will be made to accomodate him.

Any advise or experiences from other members will be welcome.

Thanks.

Radhika.

I'm afraid that your husband will have to tell the DWP precisely where he is going for ESA purposes, if he intends to be away from your home address.

The stipulation that "you should not go away from home without leaving word where you may be found" is because if a claimant is called in for a (further) medical assessment and fails to notify a forwarding address, it would not be accepted as good cause for failing to attend the medical assessment, as the claimant would have neglected the instructions as detailed on form ESA40.

With regard to the details about this ruling on ESA40, I wasn't aware of its existence until reading about it on this forum, some weeks ago. I was sent a Jobseekers Allowance guide with my ESA50 form (!) and several other people that I have spoken to have not received, at any time, the ESA guide. I'm against this rule, as it sounds pretty sneaky and controlling, especially as to qualify for ESA it seems you have to have no life and be housebound, so no journeys are to be made without informing the DWP and yet they are trying to force claimants into work, for which you will have to, in most cases, leave your house. It's all very illogical.

If you don't tell them, and they just happen to try to contact if you're away, might face some awkward questions on return

As CD advised, you are obliged to tell them where you can be found if away from home.
