Transfering Carers allowance? was created by theresa
Hello everybody

My Son receives Mid Rate Care component of DLA and I receive Carers allowance for him.

How easy is it to transfer carers allowance to another family member who would take over his daily care allowing me to resume work

Our would I have to stop claim ing and the family member would need to make a claim on the own for the carers allowance

Thank you

Hi T,

It would not be possible to simply transfer Carers Allowance over to another person.

Carers Allowance can be taxable, and can also affect other benefits :

See :

Of course, if you can no longer carry out your caring responsibilities, someone else could take them up, and apply for CA.

You would have to contact the Carers Allowance Unit.

Hi there, I have also been wondering about carers allowance. I get the highest amount of DLA and my husband was claiming carers allowance for me, but we have now separated (due to domestic abuse),and he has now had this benefit stopped. I have been told that I can claim the carers allowance myself, but cant see how this is possible. I have also just been transferred from IB to the WRAG group without a medical, which I am appealing. Today I also received a letter confirming that my DLA has been awarded until 2015, when it will then change over to PIP. I also read somewhere that if a person is claiming the carers allowance then they do not get put into the WRAG group. Its all very confusing.Any advice would be welcome. Thank

Hi,

You cannot claim Carers Allowance for giving care to one's self.

As you are in receipt of HR Care component of DLA, you may be entitled to Disability Premiums (DP) in the form of an Income Related (IR) ESA top-up to your Contribution Based (CB) ESA, which I assume that you are in receipt of as you were transferred over from IB.

See : www.gov.uk/disability-premiums-income-support

Being entitled to DP basically increases the amount that the Government states that you need to live on each week, in the form of a Minimum Disability Income Guarantee.

Firstly your financial situation would need to be assessed by the DWP to see whether your household income fell below this minimum guarantee. This would be done using an ESA 3 Form :

Sample ESA 3 Form

To see whether you were entitled to the DP's, you would have to contact The DWP requesting that you are assessed for entitlement to IR ESA , you should also send them a copy of your DLA Decision Notice, informing them that you wish to be considered for payment of DP's. They should then send you an ESA 3.

Sending Documents to the DWP or ATOS

Someone else may be able to claim CA for providing care for you, you should contact the Carers Allowance Unit, on the links that I provided in my first post on this topic thread.

See also :

Asset rule for ESA(IR)

24 hour work rule for ESA(IR)

If you are not entitled to these IR ESA top-ups, payment of your CB ESA in The WRAG will only last 365 days before it ceases :

12 Month Limit for ESA(CB)

If you can gain any amount of IR ESA top up, even a penny, there will be no 365 day limit to payment of ESA. This may also passport you to other things such as Housing Benefit , Council Tax Support, and free prescriptions and dental care, so it is worth inquiring.

This : Benefits Calculator may also give you some idea.

Finally, if your forum name is also your real name, you may wish to change it to maintain some anonymity, by following the instruction on this page :

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

Please reply to this topic if you have any further queries.
