But I suppose if when they are all gone if I still struggle to work I have to claim the income based ESA. What about claiming ESA for pension credits, how does that work. I ve been advised to claim ESA for that

ESA(IR) and Pension Credit are mutually exclusive benefits, you can only claim one or the other.

On the assumption that you are a woman then your cannot claim Pension Credit until you reach State Pension Age. See

Cruella wrote: How much can ESA for pension credits be backdated? I assume I would need a fit note for this. Should the fit note be backdated for an ESA pension credit claim? Do I have to fill the ESA form in as though it is a contribution based ESA claim when applying for ESA for pension credits?

sorry.i think i worded my last messages wrong when i used the term pension credit. i just looked back at my email from the welfare advice lady i have been speaking with, what she actually says is to put in an ESA claim to protect my national insurance contributions for my pension, she knows that i will reach pension age in 16 years but advised me to do this claim today, This is different from the pension credit thing i take it?

My colleague did wonder if this was what you actually meant :)

It's no different from making a normal claim for ESA, you can only backdate it by 3 months, you will still need to provide Fit Notes, complete an ESA50 and likely have a face to face assessment. The NI Credits will only be paid if you receive an award.

Just for completeness, they are paid whether you receive payment or not.

:) Pleased we are on the same wavelength. Um , it seems a lot to go through just for national insurance contributions. I am not sure I am up to it. I never go to the GP, I do everything over the phone and certainly cannot face the medical assessment. Is it a good thing though to be in the ESA system, I mean when my savings drop below 16 thousand would I automatically get income based ESA if I had gone through the ESA for national insurance contributions.

Also, is it the same sort of fit note for any ESA claim whether it be IR CB or just for national insurance contributions
