But still the right formal diagnosis may affect whether or not they believe that you really can't walk 50m or face a change in routine.

And the "exceptional circumstances" include a provision about having a "specific ailment" - i.e. a kosher, diagnosed illness.

I do tend to agree that it would be easier to convince ATOS/DWP of severe limitations if there is a diagnosis to back up the claims - especially with the hidden disabilities that so many of us have.

Nothing on this board constitutes legal advice - always consult a professional about specific problems

Hi C,

Of course a specific correct diagnosis of a medical condition should help. I have never stated otherwise, and have said as much : HERE , and on many other occasions.

However, it is very important, to tie in the limitations suffered as a result of these correctly documented diagnoses with the ESA qualifying descriptors, and I have always encouraged members to provide such evidence, where possible.

Members cannot assume that The ATOS HCP, or The DM, will automatically draw conclusions that correctly diagnosed medical condition will mean that they will therefore qualify under the pertinent ESA Descriptors. Therefore, it should be advantageous if members draw particular reference to the relevant descriptors themselves.

The aim of my reiteration regarding “Limitations” and ESA “Descriptors” is to try and get the mind-set of the members into approaching THE ESA WCA in such a way, rather than working under the assumption that, as they suffer with X, Y, Z, which they can prove, that they will therefore be found to have Limited Capability for Work, or Work Related Activity. This is not a given, as I am sure that you understand. Unfortunately, quite a lot of people are still under that misapprehension.

The WCA Handbook as quoted in your post, is indeed a very useful document, in that, it will help members to gain an insight into how the ATOS HCP is “supposed” to approach “The Assessment”, and what they are really looking for with regards to their findings. Whereas, looking at the ESA50 Questionnaire in a standalone capacity, does not tell the full story. I would advise all members to read The WCA Handbook from front to back in conjunction with our ESA Claims Guides.

However, The WCA Handbook is only “Guidance” and not legislation.

I think that we are both “singing the same song” with different lyrics. :)

Cheers.

I agree to the above.
I was told via CAB to list my health problems with each diagnosis and having it backed up with any documentation ie GP/Consultant letters.
List medication taken, list any mobility adaptations I use.
That was all I sent in apart from filling in vage bits in each section with a reference to see additional notes.
I now know that was not the correct way to deal with the form and filling in of it, however I was placed in the SG on a consideration as I was placed in WRAG.
Next year when I have to redo the form by keeping up to date with this site and the rightsnet site I should have a better understanding on how to complete the form, whether or not I shall get in the SG is another question,
