Hi,
I'm a new member so forgive me if I'm going about this the wrong way.

I have severe clinical depression, GEneral/social/ panic disorder. I am in the esa support group.
I have had a Atos medical on th 16 Dec 2014 told it would be weeks before I heard from them but instead got a reply within a week and got 0 points! I was distraught and bewildered by this. I immediately put in for Mandatory Reconsideration. I am writing a letter with much more detail as I had no idea how to complete the form. I am also sending GP, psychiatrist and Occupational consult reports who all state I am unfit to work for the foreseeable future. I am exhausted and so distressed at the fight to get financial support it's caused me to self harm and contemplate suicide. It's so unbearable.
I am told I will get a phone call at some point but due to my anxieties I find using the phone extremely difficult and usually end in tears. What happens if I just can't talk?

Hi,
Just registered last night and thought I'd posted something but mustn't have pressed submit!
I am so distressed to the point of almost giving up on trying to get help. When does anyone believe you!
I have severe clinical depression, General/social/ panic disorder this is the worst episode I've had. I have been off work for 20 months and shortly will lose my job. My Rep suggested early retirement on the grounds of ill health but that's another story.
Trying to get financial help is a nightmare and at times I didn't think I could go on. I loved my job and have worked all my life.
I eventually have been put into the Support group for ESA. I filled in my form for PiP with a welfare officer then had my medical on 16th dec 2014 and even though I was told it would be weeks before I heard from them I got a reply on the 23 Dec! 0 points! I phoned that day for mandatory reconsideration.I was devasted, distraught and just didn't know what to do or who to turn to for help. My daughter has helped me write a letter which details my illness more and I've attached GP, Occupational health consultant letter and psychiatrist letter all stating I am unfit to work for the foreseeable future. I was told to do this by a lady when I phoned pip last week. Is this the right way to go? I am terrified about the telephone call I've been told I will get as I have great difficulty talking on the phone. Do I have to take this phone all and what is it for?
I really hope some can help me as I can't take much more of all these rejections it's the most awful experience to put someone through with serious mental health issues.
Thank you

Hi A,

Welcome to Benefits and Work :)

Sorry to hear that you failed to qualify for any PIP Awards !! :(

I would not expect to receive the phone call, as they no longer take place, as confirmed in this extract :

"As part of the on-going drive to improve the PIP process, DWP carried out a small pilot to test the effectiveness of phone calls to claimants whose claims had been disallowed or whose benefit had been reduced.

The pilot showed that most claimants had already received and understood the written notification before being called by DWP and that some of them did not need or want further explanation of the decision.

As a result DWP is now leaving it to claimants to get in touch if they need further information."

From Page 4. of The January 2015 Edition of : The DWP Touchbase Magazine.

This phone call does not have to take place for your Mandatory Reconsideration (MR) to progress.

The important issue is that you register your written MR Request within one month of the date of the 0 points PIP Decision Notice letter.

Sending Documents to the DWP or ATOS

It seems from your comments that you did not use our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page) as an aid to filling in your PIP 2 "How your Disability Affects You" Questionnaire.

It may therefore help with your understanding of how you qualify for PIP if you have a read through that.

You could also take our : PIP Self Test

With respect to your MR, please see the following :

PIP MR/Appeals Guidance.

Mandatory Reconsiderations Explained

&

Disability Rights UK Factsheet - Appeals and Mandatory Reconsiderations.

The MR process is currently taking up to around 15 weeks to process, and you should not expect to receive written confirmation of receipt of your MR Request.

Updates may be available by you or someone else phoning The PIP Helpline :

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

There is a formal process for challenging a Decision, the first stage for this is to request a Mandatory Reconsideration which you appear to have done, if you did not do this in writing then I would recommend that you do, the DWP still regularly "lose" those made over the phone.

The process is explained in more detail in our PIP MR & Appeal guide on the following link

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

To deal with the phone call, whilst it may still happen, the DWP have now stopped making these calls, even if you do get a call you do not need to take it although it may be to your advantage to do so, that said, as you scored zero points, unless something has been fundamentally missed on your claim, it is extremely unlikely that the DWP change their minds just on what you say in a call.

You should ask for a copy of the assessment report, you can do this by phoning the DWP office that dealt with your claim, someone can do this for you, but you will need to be present to answer the security questions and to authorise them to speak to the person. Again follow up the request in writing.

Submitting more information or a revised explanation of your problems is a good idea, but I would have a good read of our PIP Claim guide (same link as above), before doing so. PIP has very specific criteria and if you were unaware of these when you completed your claim form it would be easy for you to have misrepresented your problems.

If you have any questions on the above, or anything else related to your claim, then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help. It might be worth your book marking this page in your browser for easy access.

Hi A,

Just to let you know how the forum works :

Even though it is open 24/7 for posts, queries and searches, all posts go into a pre-approval area, where they stay until a Moderator (Mod) has read and approved them.

The Mods only "guarantee" to be online 2-4PM & 8-10PM Mon-Fri.

This is why your post will not appear on the forum straight after you submit it.

Even when the Mods are online there is generally a queue, so again your post may not show up straight away.

Thank you for your previous replies.
I just got a letter today to say I have been awarded the enhanced rate for daily living although they seem to have taken little notice of my support letters from daughter and husband, medical letters, psychiatric letter and not recognised my severe mental health illness! But they still managed to award me 15 points!
I received 4 points for requiring prompting for making journeys. I tried my best with the support of my husband and daughter writing on my behalf (as I was in unable) to explain I am unable to travel far without someone travelling with me, I have panic attacks if I try a new journey to the point of having to pull over or eventually return home after phoning someone for support and help. I never expected the enhanced for mobility but did expect the basic.
I am frightened to appeal their decision about the mobility incase it affects my Daily living support.
Can you please advise.
Thank you,
Anne
