I am claim ESA I/R and DLA low rate care. Our mother has Alzheimeirs and I am thinking of applying for Carers Credit. The Carers UK people told me that I am not fit to be a carer with rheumatoid arthritis. But I know the 20 hrs include sleep overs. What is your view ? Though, will I have to attend FFI`S and attend the Jobcentre ? I am in the WRAG.

Just to qualify, you are talking about Carers Credit and not Carers Allowance as the two are not the same?

Carers Credit only pays NI Credits that count towards a full State Pension, you are already receiving these through your ESA claim.

The main question that you have to ask yourself is whether your caring for your mother contradicts any limitations that you stated on your ESA50, if it does then you run the risk of your claim being re-assessed.

If this is not an issue then you need to give some thought to your physical capabilities and whether your RA would limit the help you would be able to give and how you would deal with a situation that was beyond your capabilities; as an example if your mother had a fall.

Thank you Gordon, Yes, I would be unable to help mother to stand, if she had a fall. I would have to fetch a neighbour to help. She is 82 yrs. And opening jars, etc. My grip strength is poor. Dressing, hence buttons and turning taps difficult. I get tired and lose concentration by the afternoons. Yes, I realise the difference between CA and C. Credit. I was dismissed from my care
assistant job of 30 yrs, 4 yrs ago. NHS, of which I loved. I am 57. The Jobcentre has enrolled me in a Job Club, of which I have been attending. The Jobcentre also subscribed me to the Families Action Programme. The chap from the FAP asked if I had thought of working in a nursing home.
And Aldi `s. I have been volunteering at an elderly luncheon`s group, where I can sit as often as I need to. Why can`t I not continue with the latter until I ` retire ` at 66yrs ?

Josie

I am not suggesting that it is realistic or even medically possible but the JC+'s view is that the vast majority of claimants in the WRAG are capable of a return to work at some point and they are tasked with preparing them for that return, this can involve them sending claimants on training courses and work trials, they can also forward claimants to the Work Programme.

It is important that you understand that some of these requests can be mandatory and that failing to comply can result in your benefit being sanctioned.
