First off, good evening everyone and thanks in advance for any and all help you provide to those of us in need.

I’m writing on behalf of a friend I sometimes help out. Their PIP is up for review and as we’re going through the form and guidance you provide a couple of questions came up.

1) When granted PIP initially their condition affected their hands but now they might (yet to be investigated) have a new problem with their hands. This is causing issue with them being able to type and write for example. Should they note in their form that not only is this more of a problem, that it varies but that sitting for prolonged periods of time writing and typing is making the problem worse? It is unfortunately and they’re running out of time to get their form into PIP.

2) Some of their mental & consequently physical health problems are being made worse by external stress, specifically an antisocial neighbour. Without going into massive detail in the form or here should this be included as an example to explain the mental health complications they’ve been experiencing in the form?

Thanks again.

In part answer to both your questions, they can only score points for issues that directly relate to the PIP activities so while these issues may be worth mentioning they are not going to be considered unless they impact on their ability to reliably complete the PIP activities on the majority of days.

Re their hands, they do need to explain this as there will be assumptions made by their completing the forms.

If they are struggling to return the forms by the required date then they can ask for a two-week extension by contacting the DWP on the number included in the letter that accompanied the form.

As to the second question, those assessing them can only consider issues that have affected them for three months and would be reasonably be expected to do so for a further nine months, so I would not expect much weight to be applied to the problems that you mention.

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for your reply, everything you said makes absolute sense and backs up what's in the guide.

Thanks again.
