New combined PIP/WCA Medicals was created by micksville
When the new contracts for combined medical assessments begin in 2024, is it likely that the current scheduled timings of individual claimants reviews could alter ? For example I recently had my PIP review and was given a ten year award (before it is scheduled to be reviewed again). This was done on paperwork by DWP without need for a medical assessment. That assessment would have been carried out by ATOS in my area if I had needed one. I was also due for ESA review this month but, as has been the case for some years now it was deferred for 2 years again to June 2025. I live in North of England where maximus have the current WCA contract and have just been awarded the contract for new joint medical. I am curious as to whether the DWP and/or Maximus would follow the review dates currently in place or could there arise a scenario where they decide to start from scratch in 2024 and begin calling everyone in for new fresh joint PIP/WCA assessments right across the board? Or is it more likely if someone has a scheduled review for either then they will follow the date of the first review to come up.( in my case ESA WCA in 2 years time) and assess for both PIP and ESA at that time.

Under the current plans, I stress these are plans and no more than this at the moment, there will be no combined assessment, rather the WCA will be done away with and a claimant's ability to work will be determined by their receiving a PIP award.

On this basis, I would not expect your benefits to be reassessed any earlier than currently planned.

I get that Gordon, I understand that if, and only if, the plan to scrap the WCA does come into being, supposedly 2026 at earliest for new claimants and 2029 for current claimants PIP will then used as the benchmark for any sickness/disability benefits.....However, in the interim would current and new claimants possibly face a combined medical from 2024 before the legislation to scrap the WCA comes in. In other words do DWP intend to carry out the new combined medicals as per the contracts awarded in the interim, from 2024 to say 2026 which is when the white paper and statements surrounding it suggest the abolition of the WCA is scheduled to start being phased in. It seems strange they have awarded these contracts given the proposed changes. Surely the companies who won the tenders will get to carry out those joint medicals in the coming years until WCA is scrapped. Otherwise put those contracts up for tender? Unless the bidders who won the contracts in the various regions will get to keep the future PIP medicals when the WCA is done away with.

Hi micksville

My understanding is that there will be no combined medical, for new claimants on UC and in receipt of PIP will receive LCWRA element no matter what element of PIP they receive.

As they say the proof is in the details, I had a discussion with DWP today at a meeting and they, so they say have no additional details than what has been written in the white paper.

Keep an eye out on B&W news letter for more details.
