ESA and DBS for potential voluntary work - ? was created by little_spider
Hi all,

I am on ESA (support group) and DLA.

I am considering doing some voluntary work with children which requires a Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS) check.

Does anyone know whether the DWP would be informed if I applied for a DBS?

I am in the position whereby I am wondering if I might be able to do some voluntary work after a gap of severla years. I would like to try this opportunity, but am still a bit fragile and aware that I might find I am not yet strong enough to work, and as such I don't want to run the risk of my benefits being reassessed yet.

If anyone has any other thoughts that they feel might be useful to me in my current situation, please feel free to post these.

Meanwhile, does anyone know of a good independent disability benefits advisor in London?

Thanks

Hi ht,

As ESA is an "out of work" benefit, you would have to inform The DWP ESA Office of any work that you intend to do, whether this be voluntary or not.

Sending Documents to the DWP or ATOS

I cannot comment regarding your DBS query.

There is also the option of "Permitted Work", again you would have to inform the DWP, and only they can decide whether any work that you are considering would be classed as permitted work.

More information can be found below :

Permitted Work

Work for people living with disability or health conditions.

There is also a guide entitled "Permitted Work" on this page :

ESA Claims Guides

You should be aware that any type of work that you may do with The DWP's permission/knowledge will be taken into account at your next ESA reassessment.

Especially if any of the duties carried out in the course of the work are in contradiction to your current ESA award.

DLA is an "in work benefit" and many DLA recipients work full time. However, as above, questions may be asked if any of the duties involved in said work were contradictory to the DLA award.

I am not personally aware of any Benefit Advisers in London, see :

Where to get advice

Failing the above, try putting Welfare Rights/Advice for your Postcode/District into Google.
