ESA and lump sum payment was created by snowflake123
Hi. After many forms, phonecalls and letters I have eventually got some IR ESA. My husband is having to give up work to care for me and has found out he will recieve a lump sum of about £2000 when all the paperwork is done. How will this affect my ESA? Do you have to declare it etc? I am new to this and not sure where we stand.
He has also applied for carers allowance. Dos this affect my ESA too? I get enhanced PIP for mobility and care.
Thank you.

This lump sum will not have an effect on your ESA(IR) unless it means that your total assets and savings now exceed £6000 in which case you need to inform the DWP and there will be a deduction from your ESA(IR), see the following for details.
Asset rule for ESA(IR)
If your husband receives CA then it will be deducted from your ESA(IR) £ for £ but you will receive the Cares Premium as an add-on to your current payments, this is currently £34.20 a week.

Things have become potentially complicated as he has just received a months holiday pay owed to him. How does this work with ESA and carers allowance? Do I need to tell them about it and how will this affect things? Even with this and potential lump payment from employer we will be under £6000 capital especially as it will be used towards debts etc and somewhere to store my mobility scooter.
Thank you
Thank you

Hi sf123,
As Gordon advised : Here.
You would only have to inform ESA if your total capital, assets or savings (including any lump sum of holiday payments) exceeded £6,000.
As CA is non-means tested, you would not have to inform them at all.

I was mainly concerned that they would class holiday pay as income rather than a lump payment. I am paranoid of failing to let them know something and then it causing problems in the future. Thank you very much.
