I received a letter today informing me that Atos will be doing my assessment for DWP. They will be making a home visit but I didn't request a home visit. I believe this is unusual for Atos and I'm getting quite anxious about the assessment. What kind of medical will it be. I'm not house bound but have difficulty with my breathing so can't walk very far. My home visit is 10th April.

Hi TN,

You are correct, ATOS are generally reluctant to carry out Home Assessments for PIP and ESA !!

Mainly because it costs them more !!

I can only surmise that they have realised from the evidence that you have provided in The PIP 2 Form that you would have problems attending an Assessment Centre due to your respiratory problems.

This should be a positive, as they are conceding that you have walking limitations in "Moving Around".

Maybe, they have contacted your G.P. unbeknown to you, and your G.P. has informed them of your limitations ?

You can read what to expect at your PIP Consultation from Page 64 onwards of our : PIP Claims Guide. (2nd Link on page)

It will basically be a Q & A session, there may be some basic physical examination.

They should carry the assessment out in a room of your choosing, and should not want to see the rest of your home.

You may want to bring their attention to any aids/adaptations that you have.

You can have someone else present to take notes and offer moral support.

Good luck, I hope all goes well.

Please return with an update after the assessment.

thank you so much for your reply. My GP gave me a letter stating that I am unable to walk any distance without stopping for more than 10 metres due to my breathing difficulties and joint pains. He also put general fatigue and raised BMI. (this is due to using steriods for over 12 months, this wasn't put in the letter but it has caused me to put on a lot of weight) He said I was unable to the shopping or cooking. Unable to lift the pans due to joint pains in both hands and I have raised uric acid.

I have recently had tests done in the hospital to see why I can't come off of steriods and the results came back saying I was to continue with the steriods.

I only hope when they do come to assess me that they don't get me on a good day. Because I want them to see me when I'm having a bad day to see how it affects me.

Atos lady came out to me on the 10th April. She seemed nice and asked questions which I answered to the best of my ability. I had my friend with me and when my breathing got bad she spoke to her until I was able to speak to her again. She told me I would have a decision within 4 weeks. As this was my first claim ever I asked her what were my changes of getting PIP and she said I should get something. I'll just have to wait and see now. Thank you for all your help and as soon as I hear from them I'll let you all know.

I got my brown letter and I've been awarded enhanced mobility and enhanced daily living. I'm so grateful to you all here I didn't think I was able to claim anything and then I wasn't sure if I should but with the help of you guys I did it. I was really scared when they said I was having a home visit but my sister in law was with me. On the day I was on my nebuliser when the lady came and as I said previously she was nice and could see I was struggling with my breathing. I got the letter on my birthday 28th or April. I think I was dealt with very quickly as I only made the phone call on 15th Jan. Thank you all again for your help. I'm a very happy Nanma now.
