PIP and ESA claims was created by Neylas
Hi,
I'm new to this forum and would like to have some advice. I have had a lower back pain for more than 2 years now which seems to get worse everyday. I even stopped working 3 months ago as I could not bear the pain anymore. I don't have lots of evidence apart from a letter written by a physiotherapy clinical specialist that says that the spinal consultants have review my MRI scan which show a central disc herniation at L5/S1 causing pressure on the nerve. I have been referred to the pain clinic team whereby they may offer a nerve root injection. In the meantime, a physio session is due next Monday.
Do you think I can have a chance in applying for both ESA and PIP?
Many thanks

Welcome to the forum, you might want to have a look at the following FAQ which explain where everything is

Welcome to Benefits and Work

In case you are not aware, your real name appears to be showing in the forum, if you want to change this then follow the instructions in the following FAQ

My full name is showing, how can I stop it?

If your GP is prepared to issue a Fit Note then you can make a claim for ESA, whether an award will be made will depend on you meeting sufficient of the ESA Descriptors, these look at the limitations that result from your condition rather than the condition itself, have a look at our ESA Claim guides for more information.

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/esa1

Whilst PIP also uses Descriptors (they are different from the ESA ones), it is primarily concerned with the additional care and mobility needs that result from your conditions, first of all you will need to show that you have had these needs for at least three months and that can reasonably be expected to last for a further nine months, I don't know what effect this injection will have on your condition but it will likely be a factor considered by the DWP.

To see whether you meet sufficient of the PIP Descriptors for an award you should have a look at our PIP Claim guide. See

www.benefitsandwork.co.uk/help-for-claimants/pip

If you have any questions about the process or the criteria, then please reply to this post and we will do our best to help.

Hi Gordon,
Thanks for your reply, Neylas is not my real name it's just for the forum. I'll try together a fit note from my GPs and I'll be more than happy to have your help for the process or criteria of the claim
Many thanks

Hi,
I have been diagnosed with a central heriniated disc L5-S1 and I'm actually in so much pain that affect my mobility and my everyday living. Had a physio appointment today but could really do much because of the pain. Been referred for pain management clinic which I'm waiting for appointment, have couple of evidences from my GP such as fit note, MRI scan diagnosis report and GP referral letter to consultant. Do you think I can now apply as I was a bit reluctant to it for not having enough proof. My physiotherapist has also allowed me to put her name and address for any detailed report the Dwp may need if claims are submitted.
Thanks

If you believe that you meet the criteria for an award then there is no reason why you should not apply for the two benefits, see links in previous post, the only word of caution I would give is to try an stagger the two claims, you do not want to be caught having to complete two claim forms at the same time if it can be avoided.
