Mandatory Reconsideration

Mandatory Reconsideration was created by LJP
I've recently received my PIP award (after 18 months) and although at first glance it seemed very good, and better than I thought I'd be awarded considering the assessment I had, I'm still in two minds as to whether I should try my luck at a mandatory consideration.

What I need to know is whether a mandatory reconsideration can prove negative - i.e. reduce the PIP award either in terms of points already given (and, therefore, money) or the review / reassessment date. In my case I've been told that I'll be contacted in 2025. Is the end date of my award?

For example, in my case I've been awarded enhanced mobility but I'm still not eligible for a blue badge. Ironically, even though I voluntarily surrendered my driving license to the DVLA when I became partially sighted, I find I am now in the position where I am eligible for a scooter on Motability.

I guess I need to know is there a risk that I could lose it all if I "moan"? Should I be grateful that I got what I have and leave it be?

Any request for an award to be looked at, either as a Mandatory Reconsideration or Appeal or by reporting a Change of Circumstances opens the current award up to revision, this mean that it can increased, remain the same, reduced or even removed. A reduced or removed award is unlikely but does happen, another member posted that they had lost their PIP award on MR this morning.

This risk extends to both components, you only mention Mobility, but if you also have a Daily Living award then although you can request the DWP to only look your Mobility they can extend the review to other component as well.

To assess the risk you need to consider your current award, did you score only the 12 points required for an Enhanced award or more, if the former then there may be more risk than the latter.

Secondly, did you score in only one descriptor or multiple ones, there may be more risk if it was only one.

Lastly, how likely are you to gain extra points? If you only scored points for Going Out then how realistic is it for you to score the 8 points in the Moving Around Descriptor that you would need for a Blue Badge.

If your only goal is a Blue Badge have you looked at making a direct application to your Local Authority, the rules they use are actually less strict than those for PIP and you are not risking your PIP claim in anyway.
