PIP mobility, wheelchair or 'similar device' was created by Slowen
I wonder if anyone can help me? I am in the process of submitting my PIP form having been invited to transfer over from my DLA. I've noted that in relation to the mobility component and moving around the papers relate to those who use a wheelchair or 'similar device' are not treated as being able to stand and move 20 metres. I can't seem to find the legal wording for what 'similar device' actually means. I use a mobility scooter and wonder if this is classed as a similar device?

What the descriptor refers to is the use of s wheelchair or similar device without which the user cannot move about at all, ie walk under their own steam.
If the mobility scooter is used when you are out and about and you can walk around your home or elsewhere then you do not meet the descriptor. If you use the scooter as a wheelchair all the time and are not able to walk on your own then you meet the descriptor.

Hi,
Welcome to Benefits and Work
If your forum name is also your real name, you may wish to change it to maintain some anonymity.
This can be done quite easily by following the instructions on this FAQ :
My full name is showing, how can I stop it?
As the PIP "Moving Around" Activity part of PIP Mobility assesses your ability to "stand then move" (walk) the requisite distances covered by the Descriptors, if you have to use a mobility scooter, electric/power wheelchair, or manual wheelchair through necessity rather than by choice for the majority of the time, and cannot walk the requisite distances "reliably" then you should receive the appropriate level of points for the highest scoring Descriptor that you fulfil under that Activity.
As you may know, you need to score 8 points for a Standard Award, and 12 points for an Enhanced Award.
