PIP: Should I use "Reliably"

PIP: Should I use "Reliably" was created by blackstone
I have chronic pain and am applying for PIP.

Reliably 'is the most important PIP word’ but should I actually use it on the form? For example would it just be better to say that I can not do something if I am not safe doing it or it causes pain or discomfort or exhausts me or I am very slow at doing it? Or would it be considered by a decision maker more reasonable to state that the I can not reliably do something for said reason, without losing points for some technical reason?

I am anxious that it may not be worth using the term "reliably" as it could be interpreted to fit a descriptor that will give me less points. Even if I specify that I always need help the term "reliably" could for instance be used to contradict this.

Seems there is no simple right or wrong way, but any advice on how I should play it?

Hi East-winds

The dictionary defines 'reliable' as dependable - you are sure you are safe with it. You can rely on it not to let you down.

I guess when you are filling in these wonderful forms, you have to find a series of words that mean 'reliable' while perhaps not actually using the specific word.

For example, 'I have tried doing this and am frightened of it letting me down; I have tried doing this and it has let me down; I am never sure whether it will let me down or not. I have tried doing this and it causes me pain; I can't depend on I because in the past it has let me down/hurt me/caused me a lot of pain. It takes me a great deal of time even to try to do it because I am afraid of the pain it causes me.' There are a lot of ways to say the same thing.

No one can tell you what to say, because no one else knows the level of pain you suffer. Explain you have tried it in the past and for several reasons, as outlined above, you do not feel safe trying it again - that's all you can do really.

If you cannot do an activity under any circumstances, then you should simply say that you cannot do it and explain why

If you can do an activity, but you cannot do it reliably e.g.

• Safely – in a fashion that is unlikely to cause harm to themselves or to another person.
• To a necessary and appropriate standard – given the nature of the activity.
• Repeatedly – as often as is reasonably required.
• In a timely manner – in a reasonable time period.

The you should explain that you cannot do it reliably and why.

You need to be able to do an activity reliably and on the majority of days to not be eligible to score points.

These are not just words, they are part of the legislation and those assessing you are legally required to apply these terms when looking at your capabilities to perform the PIP activities.

Hi
Pain is subjective so maybe use pain killer prescriptions, pain clinic visits etc to show pain is a constant factor. Often pain meds cause side effects which also cause problems so don't be afraid to use this as well.
