PiP mental health reconsideration ? Need Help pls was created by Greenbean18
Hello
I am new member joined to help complete my mums renewal form for PIP. The site helped so much, had face to face accessment very traumatic for my mum who suffers from server agraphobia, anxiety depression and other health issues.
Just had brown envelope finally and award has stayed the same whilst I am so relieved about this I feel I should ask for a reconsideration on the mobility issue she has been awarded 10 points for not able to undertake a journey without causing great stress and anxiety which is correct. But on the moving around question she scored 0 . Yes she can move around indoors most of the time although the medication affects this, but she has only been outdoors 3 times in the last 12 months one of these being the accessment apt it took 3 days of higher medication and a week of desstress , once out doors she is unable to move more than a few feet without someone holding on to her and pulling her along. She freezes or she goes into flight and flight mode. She was hit by a car in November when she got free of her carer in a panic she is definitely not safe to go out on her own and could not reliably be expected to say walk to the corner shop on her own . This is my query should she qualify for At least 4 points for not being able to move around OUTSIDE reliably and safely on her own ? Can anyone help me or know where to find clarification on this.
Thank you

Hi Theresa,
Welcome to the forum. I'm glad you found our guides helpful, the following link should help you find your way around the forum.
Welcome to Benefits and Work
The 'moving around' descriptor deals specifically with physical problems, it is not clear whether your mother has any of these?
You do not need to post duplicate messages if your first one does not appear immediately. Every post on this forum has to be read and approved by a moderator before being made public. The mods are only guaranteed to be available between 2-3.30 and 8-9.30pm Monday - Friday and even then we can't get round to everything at once. I have deleted your duplicate message so that we can keep everything together in one place for you. For this reason will you please post any messages relating to your mother's PIP claim on this topic? You will find it easily in future if you bookmark/favourite it on your web browser now. thanking you in advance for your co-operation

Thankyou for the reply . My mum ability to move about all depends on how much medication she is given . On a bad day/week the medication completely knocks her out or she is unable to walk or stand dose t even get out of bed, if she is having a reasonably good day or week then although she is unsteady on her feet she can move around the house as she feels safe and there is always someone with her, however good or bad she is not safe or reliable to walk out doors without someone with her as the medication affects her ability to walk, balance, judgement and this is without the anxiety issues she has from her Agraphobia .
What I am trying to explain is that I know the moving around decipher is referring to moving physically . She hasn't got any medical condition that prevents her from walking it's more the medication she has to take for her other conditions that prevent her from being able to walk safely and reliably especially if she has to go outdoors, but dose affect her mobility indoors too.
I hope I have explained this ok .
The advice I need is should I ask for a reconsideration to increase the current award of 10 points on outside journeys or should I ask for the moving around option to be looked at for a score she currently scored 0 on moving around.
Many thanks

I think you are going to struggle to score points for the Moving Around activity if your mother has no documented problem with walking.
Recent guidance for the Going Out activity recommend that the 12 point Descriptor
should be treated as an issue of navigation not distress, as a result it is very unlikely that someone without documented cognitive or sensory problems will meet the criteria.
You may be able to argue that the effects of your mother's medicine has a severe impact on her ability to walk, but the guidance from the DWP states
none of which lend themselves to this argument.
You need to balance the risk to her current award to likelihood of an increased one.

Recent guidance for the Going Out activity recommend that the 12 point Descriptor
f. Cannot follow the route of a familiar journey without another person, an assistance dog or an orientation aid.
should be treated as an issue of navigation not distress, as a result it is very unlikely that someone without documented cognitive or sensory problems will meet the criteria.
You may be able to argue that the effects of your mother's medicine has a severe impact on her ability to walk, but the guidance from the DWP states
This activity considers a claimant’s physical ability to move around without severe discomfort, such as breathlessness, pain or fatigue.
none of which lend themselves to this argument.
You need to balance the risk to her current award to likelihood of an increased one.
