My son has been awarded DLA. Im receiving income related ESA and got awarded PIP.I got a form asking if I want apply for severe disability premium or use someone as a carer.I arranged carer for my son and I don't know what would be best solution for myself.I just don't want to loose other benefits.any ideas?By the way could I be carer for my son myself?
You really need to face to face advice as we cannot give detailed financial advice on the forum.
The SDP will depend on whether someone else lives with you at the moment. If it is just your son and you then you should be able to claim the SDP as your son should be disregarded at the moment.
If your son receives DLA MRC or HRC then you can claim CA for him, the CA will be paid but then deducted from your ESA(IR) but you would also receive the Carers Premium giving you a nett increase of about £34 a week on top of any increase for the SDP
If you do claim CA then you need to be aware that this may be considered at your next assessment for ESA so if your caring activities would conflict with the reasons you were awarded ESA then this could be an issue.
