Clarifing Descriptors was created by ccactus
I have spent all weekend reading the guides for esa; as I am preparing my esa 50 for submission (although not due till 23/02, I want to get it over with). Would you mind clarifying a couple of descriptors for me: For instances standing and sitting, I can walk 100 metres, but can be in pain by 50 metres - (not always, dependant of weather etc and sometimes I just continue on through the pain). Do I tick it varies and explain, 100 metres or go for 50 metres because this is worst case scenario.

Secondly Reaching, again this is an activity I can do once or twice but not repeatedly, again there are fact to take in to consideration i.e. the cold etc. I can reach to a top pocket but could not reach top of head repeatedly - I do have bilateral problems - same question as above go for it varies and explain or no.

Basically is the answer no to the questions if you can only do an activity once or twice, and not repeatedly; or do you answer it varies and then explain.

Thank you for your help, sorry if the answers are glaringly obvious, but I need to get this straight in my head, so that I give myself the best chances, without exaggerating/or lying about my capabilities.

I'm a bit confused on what you are asking about, you refer to the Standing and Sitting activity but use the criteria for Moving Around :)

For Moving Around, please be award that this is not a walking test, it is a Mobility test! In addition to your walking it considers your ability to self-propel a manual wheelchair over the same distances, you do not need to be using a wheelchair or even to own one for it to be considered. SO even if you can show your walking is restricted, unless you can also show that you cannot self-propel the wheelchair you will still not score points.

For Standing and Sitting it is the total time that you can remain at a workstation that is being tested, so you can move from a standing to seated position and back again without the clock stopping, it will only be when you have to move away from the workstation due to significant discomfort or breathlessness that the time will be looked at.

For reaching, be aware that this looks at both hands and arms, so even if you are restricted in one hand/arm, you will not score points if the other is not effected.

As to how to answer the questions. First if you find the tick boxes restrictive then you can mark them "see below" and answer in the comments box, just make sure that you actually answer the question asked.

By ticking "it varies" you are saying that the way you are limited by your conditions changes, you need to explain how it varies and the time that effected for, so typically you would talk about how you are at your worst, your best and how you are the majority of the time and for each you would indicate the number of days a week, or a month, or weeks a year, etc. that you effected in that way.

Tick what you are capable of doing for the majority of the time, taking into account restrictions such as significant discomfort and repeatability as appropriate.

Sorry Gordon, I did get my descriptors muddled, I did mean standing and walking, I cannot propel myself in a wheelchair or use a stick due to bilateral weakness in arms and shoulders. I was not aware I could put 'see below' which is really helpful as I do find the tick boxes very limiting.
Thank you for your advice
