contribution based ESA was created by Colin
Hello I wonder someone can offer advice on this for me.. I have recently made a claim for ESA and I have had a letter saying I'm not entitled to income based ESA but am entitled to contribution based ESA of £73.10 per week. However they say that because I claim carers allowance as I care for my elderly mother then this counts as income and therefore I will actually only receive £11 ESA per week. In addition to this my wife is a full time student and receives a student loan (maximum amount) and this is also taken into account. I was led to believe that if I was awarded contribution based ESA then income was not taken into consideration? please could someone advise me on this?

You need to check with the DWP as to whether you are receiving ESA(CB) or not as the deductions you mention imply that it Income Related!

Colin, I too àm on ESA contributory, unfortunately ESA and carers allowance are classed as overlapping benefits. Despite my illness I have looked after my son for five years since his horrendous brain haemorrhage but am unable to claim carers. As my support group ESA is more than carers allowance I shall continue to claim this benefit.
