ESA additional premiums was created by Jennifer123321
Hi
I would welcome any feed back regarding my situation.
In January 2008 after a serious illness and major breakdown it was decided that I move to my parents home so that mum could take care of me, this has been the case and up until September last year I had sole use of there tiny space room!
I was put on the housing list in the hope that in time something suitable may become available but it had to be within a secure assisted living development in order to care for my needs, being under the age of 60 my local council have found this impossible.
So last summer my parents decided to extend there property and build an almost self contained annex for me. This was completed last September and I now have more or less independent living apart from mum preparing my meals etc.
When the new council tax bills come out this year it was suggested to me that I apply for disabled person discount on the grounds of independent living and disabled. The lady that visited was lovely and could clearly see I have both physical and mental health issues and being independent but so close to family was by far the best living solution for us all.
We were awarded a discount (lower band applied)
She suggested now that I may qualify for the additional payments on my ESA? I already get the £15.90 however this has recently been stopped as I get a very tiny personal pension and overlaps very slightly. I would benefit from any other additional premiums though.
Would it be worth my asking? Applying? Sorry such a long story!
Thank you for any advice in advance....

You may qualify for the Severe Disability Premium. Do you have a Daily Living award of PIP or a Medium or higher award of DLA care?
To qualify, you must be receiving a qualifying award, you need to be living alone or considered to be living alone and no one must be receiving Carers Allowance against any PIP or DLA award.
I think there will be concerns about your living arrangements and whether you are actually living alone, you need to be very clear in any communications that you might make with the DWP about your situation.

Hi Gordon
Thank you for your reply, I get the middle rate DLA for living and the higher for mobility.
Mum qualifies for carers but doesn't receive it as she too gets a very small private pension.
Maybe I should think about it a little longer as I wouldnt want to rock the boat in anyway.

Pension income would not prevent a claim for Cares Allowance.

Hi Gordon
Are you saying she should try then even if rejected due to her private pension?

I can't comment on whether they should claim CA or not, you need to decide who should receive the money; you via a Premium or your mother through a CA claim.
But I can say that a personal pension does not prevent a claim or payment of CA.
