I have had a text message to contact ESA at DWP on my mobile. Surely if they want to get hold of me they would write an official letter or call me directly? I can’t afford to call the 0345 number and be hanging around for hours. Does anyone have any advice or experience? Should I cover myself and write a letter?

Are you sure it was the DWP, it would be unusual for them to use a text to contact a claimant in this way?
There's nothing the DWP would need to speak to you about that cannot be covered in a letter.
The ESA Helpline is now an 0800 although you should check that your service treats this as a free call.
